Well, it's a done deal.  Not that there was ever any doubt about it.

The Ballpark Village developers got their government entitlement handout of about $30 million from - yep, you guessed it, you and me the average taxpayer.

Because this is roughly "in the ballpark" of the amount of profit an investment of this size would generate over a couple of years, this essentially means the State, along with the previous City handout, guarantees their profit for this venture.

And remember how we were all going to get a state income tax break from all that money Blunt and the Republicans saved by slashing Medicaid earlier in this legislative session?  Well, now we know where the money was REALLY intended to go.  Truly disabled people were displaced and neglected, yet: Where is our state income tax break?

Isn't this taking from the poor and giving to the rich?  A sort-of Reverse Robin Hood?  Maybe Communism in Reverse, where the state guarantees profits for the rich?

And where are those fiscal conservative Republicans, so up in arms against any kind of entitlement program, so against any form of welfare?  "Personal responsibility" is their battle cry!  "Work for it", they say.   Hmmmm - where is the "personal responsibilty" for the profits of their venture and why don't they "work for" their success, I wonder?

This should prove to even the most cynical that Republicans are not truly against "wasteful tax and spend" welfare programs, they just send the cash to a different, elite crowd.

This is a government entitlement program, a welfare program, for the rich, pure and simple.

yes I was sick when I read the headlines and you called it write - the average tax payer you and I will pay for this. I don't know about you but I certainly can't afford to even to go a game. I say if they wanted the Ball park village let the cardinals and money people pay for it. I'm tired of paying for things that I can't afford to visit. Its unfair to lobby that cost to us. What about the working poor who can't afford health insurance for their families - yes its a twisted turn and the Rich is getting the handout they asked for while the rest of us picks up the cost.

derotts3 I totally agree with you, this ball park is for the rich and not for us little people..people are suffering while the rich are having a good time at our expense..

Thanks for your comments, derotts3 and devas...

I just went to a game two weeks ago on "free" tickets from my wife's employer and some "free" event that was! $15 to park. And some of the parking was on property that was formerly a city street around old Busch! When I saw that I thought, "Shouldn't the city own that? I wonder who profits from THAT deal!"

Then there's the $8.50 beers! $4.50 for a bottle of water! I'm surprised they didn't charge me to use the bathroom!

And the place was packed with folks buying way more stuff than I was - cotton candy, nachos, etc.

With that sort of money being made, these owners need to come to YOU AND ME for a tax handout? I think that's just downright insulting!

Hey, my house needs work. Fixing it up will provide jobs, beautify the neighborhood, and raise tax revenue by increasing the property tax. Where do I sign up for MY handout?

Derotts and Devas, you seem to be against the Ballpark Village. You are also stout republicans from what I see in other blogs. Well think of Ballpark Village as a very tiny model of this country. THIS IS WHAT THE ADMINISTRATION AND "COMPASSIONATE CONSERVATIVES" ARE DOING TO THIS COUNTRY. I'm sorry to shock you with this statement, but there aren't any real conservatives left. It has become blatently obvious that todays "conservatives" go completely 180 on what the party is supposed to stand for(and what they spew to the common voter before election cycles). We'll cut taxes, slash spending, fight for the middle-class and the working man!!!

HA!!!

I pity the fool...

Yes, some will say "well 'dumbocrats' aren't any better". To that I partially agree(just not the dumbocrat part - grow up kids), they all seem to have dollar signs in thier eyes. But take a hard look at where this country has gone in the 7 INCREDIBLE years of this GREAT REPUBLICAN ADMINISTRATION.

Ha!!!

I pity the fool...

That money could have been used for much better things! It's not fair, not everyone likes baseball and for those that do, alot can't afford to even go to a game anymore.

I am not a baseball fan. But I do know baseball games in downtown generate tax revenue for the city and the state. The $30 Million for the Ballpark Village will help future revenues. Do the Cardinals own Ballpark Village or does another group actual own it? Cities get most of their revenue from Real Estate and Personal Property Taxes. Developed property is worth much more. It looks to me what is being done is making tax dollars generate more tax dollars. Not to mention all the jobs created to build it and all the businesses which will be going in there. There is always another side to the story. Both sides need to be presented so people can make a valid decision.

I am wondering how much the condo's will be selling for? I also hope the company I work for gets some of the work on it. Kinda selfish I know, but it would be a cool project to work on.

Here is my letter that I will mail tomorrow:
Mr. Peter Kinder, Lt. Governor,
State of Missouri
201 West Capitol Avenue
Room 224
Jefferson City, Missouri 65101
Dear Mr. Kinder;
I am deeply disappointed in the actions of the State of Missouri relative to the requests of the Owners of the St. Louis Cardinal Baseball Team over the proposed Ballpark Village development. I sincerely believe that the hard-earned State and Local tax monies generated by the taxpayers can be well spent on things like repairing bridges and highways, not paying for a private development that only benefits the Owners of the Baseball Cardinals.
When the Owners of the Baseball Cardinals had first proposed the New Ballpark, the Ballpark Village was originally included in the original plans and was supposed to be a “gift” from the Ownership to the Fans of the St. Louis Cardinals. But, it seems like it was not the case. Now, the Fans and Taxpayers of St. Louis City and the State of Missouri will be paying a part of the development cost.
This, I believe is not a good use of our limited resources. The Ballpark Village is not a “public good” that requires tax monies for development or maintenance. Such things like highways and bridges are “public goods” because individuals or groups of people cannot finance them and need to be financed through taxes. This Ballpark Village does not benefit All Citizens of the State of Missouri because not all Citizens will be able to enjoy its usage.
I hope you will reconsider any future requests of Private Ownerships who require tax monies for private development

Let's not forget the impending budget woes of MoDot, the poor conditions of area schools and, oh yeah, those who can't afford health care.
Never mind the Environmental Causes like a statewide recycling program or clean air act. 30 million dollars is better spent on a little round ball and a bunch of tree stumps (the players not the bats) Shame on the legislature. Why did this not go to public vote? When did baseball become a state run game? Does the State supply the steroids too?

mrmgrady - kudos to you! Very well written letter - I LOVE it.

I hate to sound like a spoilsport, and PLEASE do mail the letter, but sending it to Mr. Kinder it will fall on deaf ears. He is a pro-big-business Republican, after all. He hates welfare when it is for middle-class or poor people, but LOVES welfare when it is for his elite friends!

kadas, you response was predictable. In fact, I predicated your response in my second comment above - fixing up my house (as well as every homeowner's) would result in higher tax revenue and jobs, but hey - where is our tax handout? Providing Medicaid medical care for people who need it provided jobs, did it not? I DID present the other side, sir. The other side is the greed of asking us taxpayers to pay for their profits.

You are right about one thing, of course: Developed property is worth more in tax revenue. But, first, developed property is usually paid for by private investors - hence the term "private enterprise" that Bush and the Republicans like to use so much. Second, if they were NOT going to develop it (as they originally promised to get the Stadium welfare) WITHOUT the tax handout (as they threatened) then why doesn't our government do what a representative government SHOULD do and use EMINENT DOMAIN and take the property from them and give it to someone who WILL develop it privately? You know, like they do with middle-class homes for shopping malls.

Rather than getting a tax welfare handout, they should have had this property taken from them and given to the highest bidder. That would be the right "free enterprise" way to develop it.

The more we understand BOTH side of this issue, the more "horrendous" (thank you, becker!) and outrageous this insulting mis-use of our tax dollars is.

Let me know if you need a stamp for that letter, mrmgrady! And thank you! Thanks to a lot of people like you, remember they won't be able to do this anymore in the city because of the law passed last year!

I think we should write William DeWitt III a letter he is listed in the white pages. He is the head of the St. Louis Cardinals. Funny that we can fund a project that they did not plan accordingly for and we have schools that have no AC and homeless people. Rock on support a team that has druggies and alcoholics.

Old Bill DeWitt is just doing what he and his buddy George W. Bush did down in Texas.
Next they will be selling the Cardinals and make a killing off a taxpayer funded development.

Sick of the extreme right wing profiteers commandeering this country putting profits ahead of people. I'm old enough to remember when the government represented the people, not just the wealthiest of the wealthy. But that doesn't mean I don't love my two cute little Fox Terriers and all doggies! But we all need to have some fun every now and then, in the face of a continuing and harrowing threat from the extremists and fanatics to take our freedom and our money as they force their agenda on all of us. We need to take our country back, and we can have fun doing it! Life under Obama will just be more fun - no more hangups about prayer in schools or burning flags, we'll just get on with life! Here's hoping we don't make yet another four year mistake - More of the Same Pain McCain, or Obama, we'll choose, and live with the decision for four more years. I think the choice is clear, don't you?
