This happens all the time and it's soooo frustrating!!

I'm doing some remodeling in my home and was looking at a few websites to see what my options are to replace my stair-rails with wrought iron. So, when I received an e-mail with "stairrail" in the subject line, I opened it thinking a company was sending me information.  What I found was a sexually explicit e-mail, complete with filthy language, pictures and who knows what... IF I  had clicked on the link.  First of all, who are these people who send the e-mails?  Why do they "trick" you into opening the nasty messages  by putting things like stair rail in the subject line, and what in the heck do they get out of it???  I  have all kinds of filters  but they still make it through. I can guarantee I've never been on a website that would put me on some kind of  mailing list to receive these... or they could just put "nasty filthy sexual trash" in the subject line, instead of trying to trick me into opening the e-mail!   We just did a story on a young boy who googled pokemon and ended up on one of these sites... ITS RIDICULOUS!   Laws? Regulations? Monitoring? Hello????

Before my dad died, he ordered some fishing equipment for himself and my little boy. I think it was some kind of lures or bait.

After he died, my Mom and my little boy both got letters filled with filth.

At first we thought it has something to do with the death announcement, but since my son also got it, we finally saw that he had sent both addresses to them.

I don't knowm but evil is coming through in lots of ways, and these senders think that is funny, I guess.

I guess they havn't figured it out yet, that that is the way everyone got here on earth and that has been thousands of years. THey think they invented something.

These internet porn companies pay for your address and they also pay to have their names show up first in search engines..... Type in the name toys and see what happens.... You are right there should be laws....

I don't get them through my email address, but I do get them on my AOL instant messenger. It's rally a pain in the bucket.

Sandy,

I think you're just the person to take this on! It has to start with one person. Be her!

Shan there is nothing to take on.... There is nothing illegal about what they are doing...It is no different than the junk mail you get in your mailbox at home..... Until the law changes they will keep on..But our lawmakers don'tgive this much priority..... I do have the luxury of flagging them as spam and they can't send me a second e mail from the same address... But they change their address quite often.........

It seems everyone's email address is subject to being purchased by companies that do this.

It could be a subject worth taking on. Once upon a time we did not think it was possible to end unwanted phone calls to our home and our current Attorney General found a way to get this done.

We the people still have a voice in the matter and if enough people make enough noise about it, someone will listen. Now, the key is enough people making enough noise. Jay Nixon's office may be a place to start. If they agree with us then the next step is finding a legislator to submit it as a new law.

The law could be known as the "Stair-rail" law.

Figman we might be wishing for something we don't wan't.... Right now E_mails are free... If they start changing the laws they might add in a usage fee.... Kind of an electronic stamp that the post office can charge us......

Wild you are right....we will have to weigh our rights as compared to cost of our rights.

Mr. Wildflower and Figman... you're absolutely right! I should have the right to see the material IF I want... but I should also have the right NOT to see it... in this case I don't have that choice. The "sender" has the rights... not the recipient. Fair?

Sandy, I get the same kind of garbage! We also get info from pharmacy companies in Canada, selling sexually fulfilling meds. We've NEVER bought anything like that over the internet or anywhere else. I don't get it. I also get emails describing really disgusting sexual encounters! I would like this to stop, but can't seem to make it do so.

Sandy,

The best way to prevent this type of activity from occurring is to make sure of the terms of service for each site you visit for information. If they don't sell your information, they will state such. If they don't have a strict policy outlining use of your personal information, don't give it to them because they will sell it and you will get spammed to death.

I ordered a product for a client once who did not have a credit card. I had to change my email address due to their refusal to remove my name from their lists. Both email and at home was 20+ unwanted items per day. That is when I started viewing the privacy policies.

I think you'll find it will really help.

Laws won't work. What everyone seems to forget is that the internet is international. So, just because we enact some law in this country doesn't mean that another country has to abide by that law. So, if I own a company that specializes in generating irritating, distasteful E-mail, but, I'm outside the United States, the US laws don't impact me. I can still send those E-mail messages to you, and there's nothing that can legally be done to stop me.

There are actually third world countries that cater to these type of businesses because they get revenue from them, and most (conveniently) have no extradition agreements with the US.

Hello Sandy et al. I agree wholeheartedly that we are seeing too much filth on the internet. This may seem very surprising but my AOL account emails seldom allow filth to my "inbox". It does go to spam.

My boys (both under age of 12) enjoy seeing YouTube video of baseball catches, car races, great sports moments, etc... but I notice any time I search for that type of video on the right hand side is some big boobed gal wanting you to call her? Why can't YouTube create a rated G search feature thus meaning my kids will only get laughs at the goofy video versus "sex and the internet".

I have found that the best preventative measure is to surf with them. Thank God they like MLB.com and Webkinz.com...LOL - I still sit near them when they are on the computer.

Keep it clean!

Clicked on a site I thought was going to have coloring pages for Mickey Mouse and up popped a gay porn site. Boom- naked men with no password or anything needed.

A called AOL and thye said that those types of sites "piggyback" one other sites. They can shut the site down but they often cannot be trace and just move to another place.

You cant police the whole world.

But you can police your own home and your own computer. Take charge of it yourself.

I have several email addresses using hotmail, gmail and yahoo. All porn, drug and most other emails end up in the junk folder using their own filters. I too never went to those sites but they end up in the spam/junk folders that I empty without even looking anymore. Strangely the college, coffee and mortgage ones get through and I never asked for those either. Selling of personal info is big buisiness these days.

It's going to be difficult if not impossible to stop this crap because the vast majority of it is originating overseas.

Most of these things originate in Malaysia or, my favorite, Belarus (yes, I actually traced the source of some crap mal-ware to an IP address registered with a state-run telephone system in Belarus.)

What the heck these folks get out of this is beyond me. I think the best way to stop them is to put our finest IT brains together and let them attack and bring down THEIR servers with a malicious software attack! I'd sure like to crash a server or two run by these overseas goons!

Every time I get something like that in my inbox, and I can't figure out how I get that disgusting stuff, I spam it right away. I am afraid to open to find a contact person because I will either get really grossed out or one of my kids would so happen to come downstairs at that very moment. I have a 6 year old, 3 year old and a 16 month old. they don't need to see that junk.....I just don't see how it can be stopped.

The one and only way I deal with them is to NOT OPEN anything that I dont recognized. So therefore if I dont have you in my address book and I dont recognize your name, it is automatically deleted. Period. I rarely have a problem with this. One other thing is to check the subject box to see if it is something or someone you recognize.

I anchor the 6 p.m. newscast and love being a part of the Fox 2 News Team. When I'm not anchoring the news, I'm trying to keep up with my two teenaged sons. (All the warnings about teenagers are true!) Just kidding, boys! I feel very fortunate to have such great kids... including my two step-daughters. My wonderful husband, who's also in the biz, is extremely talented and supportive of everything I do. I'm a huge animal lover. I have two dogs, a horse and a cockatiel. But, as a kid my pets included rabbits, goats, a racoon and a skunk! (I grew up in the Ozarks). I've traveled quite a bit, met with some famous celebrities and even been to a goat roping or two, so we have lots to blog about!
