It's day 3 of the teacher's strike in Cahokia... forcing the school football team to forfeit Friday's game against Carbondale.  The team is undefeated at 4-0... this will put them at 4-1 (which is a huge deal for these guys).   I don't know the rules...  but it seems to me the game could  be rescheduled for a later date so they don't have to take the loss.   Don't get me wrong... I admire teachers and believe they're  not paid nearly enough for what they do, each and every day,  for our kids... our future!  I also know how hard the boys work and wish there was a way they didn't have to "take a hit".

Sandy - I agree with you. (Please see my blog pertaining to the Cahokia strike). I also posted on that blog a website where you can see what some teachers are making. I know we all feel they don't make enough and 90% of them don't but in some districts...they make up to $125,000 as a teacher.

Please see blog and stats - plus visit that website.

Why couldn't the kids still play. Couldn't a parent take over for the school coach? It is a shame the kids are missing out on school, they are also losing.

Oh the poor neglected football players. BooHoo whaaaay cry. Unbelievable. School is much more than a football team. What about the Cross Country, volleyball, tennis, softball, field hockey, and soccer teams? Then there are all of the other EXTRACURRICULAR activities. Why is it the media only think football is played at school? I do not recall any of the news stations coming to the opening of my students’ art show at the Saint Louis Galleria last year. Despite what the athlete does on the field they also have to perform in the classroom. I have had several recruiters ask how a particular student are in the classroom as well as written several recommendation letters for students who want to go to college. At least the football players can get a tape of their performance on the field something the other athletes do not have (unless a parent tapes a game or race).

Those teachers that Speedy speak of making over $100k have been teaching for at least 25 years. I am not seeing how much the district(s) pay for health insurance or social security. This has a huge impact on what the teacher is actually able to take home. When you take out insurance and social security then the salaries are similar to what the teachers in the St. Louis area make.

Let me ask you this what should a teacher make? How did you determine this? Is a teacher more or less important than lets say a journalist (or you can pick another job)? As I tell my students be sure to be specific and support your statements.

Does anybody but me feel that maybe the kids are being used as a political pawn to gain public sympathy..... The real issues are still there and that is what they should be addressing.... yes collateral damage is going to exist and that is the education.... The Sports will recoup..... Its obvious that they need a federal mediator so why not go ahead and bring one in.....

Snoopy - you are too involved. Your heart/blood are obvious "teaching" while your brain needs to focus on one of your comments.

1. A teacher (based upon longevity/degree) overall makes a good wage. If you do not like the pay or complain about it (which those over $100K shouldn't - of course) then change professions.

2. Truly underpaid are nurses and police officers. Take a look at their pay.

No matter what is said in any blog I think you'll always be repetitive.

Again, it's Cahokia teachers that we are focusing on and they are asking for a one year contract with a small percentage increase. According to the news, they are asking for nothing more but of course that could be incorrect.

Speed: Which comment are you referring to? If is your No. 1 statement I didn’t say that. I may have used it as a quote to start the reasons why I left the commercial sector to become an educator.

Actually I should become a nurse less hours more money than what I make. Plus I don’t have to take my job home with me, and blah, blah, blah. Don’t want to be repeating myself.

I do agree that police officers do not make enough money with they have to deal with. Firefighters and Paramedics are the same way.

This I will repeat as long as people think that teaching is a part time job, a babysitting service, or a glorified little league.

I anchor the 6 p.m. newscast and love being a part of the Fox 2 News Team. When I'm not anchoring the news, I'm trying to keep up with my two teenaged sons. (All the warnings about teenagers are true!) Just kidding, boys! I feel very fortunate to have such great kids... including my two step-daughters. My wonderful husband, who's also in the biz, is extremely talented and supportive of everything I do. I'm a huge animal lover. I have two dogs, a horse and a cockatiel. But, as a kid my pets included rabbits, goats, a racoon and a skunk! (I grew up in the Ozarks). I've traveled quite a bit, met with some famous celebrities and even been to a goat roping or two, so we have lots to blog about!
