Vacation time next week, yea!!!   I've decided to do a little camping and float trip.  I've floated the Current, Jack's Fork, Meremec and Huzzah... I'm looking for a good "new" float that's still fairly close... any ideas??

Although I've never floated yet, my son always goes to the Black River. He said the water is great! Cold and clear.

We called the River DePere -River DeStink, too! When my parents got married in 1945 (they were both from Lemay), they came SO close to buying one of those little brick houses on the "river" bank. Thank God, they decided to move out in the sticks-Fenton-in a log house on a couple acres!
Sandy, sorry can't come up with any new suggestions for you-my last float trip was on the Huzzah, and you've already been there.

The best river trip I went on was White water rafting on the Snake River in Jackson, Wyoming..Super great time...May be a little far for you ... LOL..

Also white watered the St Louis River in Minnesota..also a little far..

The Black river is close and a good float if the water is up..Otherwise, you may have to drag across some sand bars..

Where ever you decide to go...Have a great time and remember to bring the sunscreen, and critter repellent...

Sandy, if you have any diva qualities at all -- floating in a gondola at the Venetian in Las Vegas. Can't be beat and you don't even have to row!

Hi Sandy: I love to camp in the Shawnee National Forest area. Its the most amazing place in the world as far as I'm concerned.
There is a place called Camp Ondessonk and it rocks! Summer camp activities take over in June - August, but you can camp there any other time during the year. Ondessonk.com go check it out! I have some wonderful photos in my album of the place.
I had to tell you that my brother is in the hosptial right now and I was visiting him this evening. We were talking about the website, and he told me he was your biggest fan and he thinks your beautiful. :) Peace, and have a great weekend camping and being one with nature! Jana

We go to Markum Springs State Park on the Black River!!
It is part of the Mark Twain National Forest!
You can go on several floats! One is about 5 hours long and the other about 8 hours long! It is very calm and a relaxing float!!
It is only about 3 hours from here out 55 south >
It is not too far from Piedmont!

I agree with the Black River being a great float! The water is crystal clear...the first time I floated it, I was in AWE with how clear and clean it is!

Bourbese Valley is also a geat suggestion...with tons of different campgrounds and float companies if you need the set up.

St. Francois State Park used to be a great spot...but have not been there in years....

Have a great time!

The Meramec River is a very different river depending on where you go. If you put in near it`s source it is clear as glass but shallow. the farther down you go, the slower it moves and the greater amount of land drains into it. Which also increases the amount of sediments and trash dumped into it. Find a river close to your heart if not your home, and treat it with respect. There are beautiful places that we see every day and don`t appreciate. Take some time out and even a landfill can provide you with a glimpse of something beautiful. If You took a float every year on one river and didn`t see something new each time, you weren`t looking hard enough. I have fished the Meramec at night, sometimes all night, several times a month from March through November and see something new all the time. Try a winter float sometime, when there is snow all over and the river is unlike anything you have ever seen. I have been out there when it was 20 degrees below zero, at night, gigging fish and was able to watch Beavers swimming alongside the boat, deer crossing the river, and despite being cold I had some of the best times that anyone wanting to see wildlife could have.

Hey everyone... I'm back from my float trip and wanted to thank you for all your great ideas. We ended up taking a trip that started on the Courtois, it joined the Huzzah and ended in the Meremac. The kids loved the mud slides, rope swing and nice little bluff to jump from (all illegal now... shhh) We caught a few fish and had a blast. A lot of you suggested the Black River. I didn't get it organized in time but that's my next trip. I've been on the Buffalo in Arkansas... a great trip!! Mud 56 suggested the Bourbese... that's close... where do you put in?? Wierd, I love to float but in the winter??? I hate to be cold. I bet its beautiful though. Jana, I checked out your website for a future trip and tell your brother thanks!!! I hope he's out of the hospital very soon. Okay, vacation is over and it's back to work... Yuck!!

I anchor the 6 p.m. newscast and love being a part of the Fox 2 News Team. When I'm not anchoring the news, I'm trying to keep up with my two teenaged sons. (All the warnings about teenagers are true!) Just kidding, boys! I feel very fortunate to have such great kids... including my two step-daughters. My wonderful husband, who's also in the biz, is extremely talented and supportive of everything I do. I'm a huge animal lover. I have two dogs, a horse and a cockatiel. But, as a kid my pets included rabbits, goats, a racoon and a skunk! (I grew up in the Ozarks). I've traveled quite a bit, met with some famous celebrities and even been to a goat roping or two, so we have lots to blog about!
