STLRaceChicks' Blog

We have these little critters all over our yard but we are not sure what they are. They do not have blue tails like the other skinks we have seen. Does anyone know if they are a different type of skink or some other reptile?

All I know is that they really like to drive our dog to distraction!

We actually think they are very interesting, and I like the fact that they eat bugs! One did give my daughter a start though. It was outside on her window ledge when she went to open her window the other morning!

One thing I know is that they are very fast. Our dog tries in vain to catch them all the time, and I always tell him he's better off not catching them because they have sharp little teeth.

I think it is a Broad head Skink.... Those are probably males in the pictures for females have stripes.... It is probably mating season so they are just looking for a good meal and a little love.....

Then again aren't we all....

Thanks, Mr. Wildflower! We have seen these for years but didn't have a clue what they were called until my daughter's boyfriend told us he thought they were skinks. I honestly had never heard of a skink before.

Snipes...yes, skinks, no! :)

Hey! I don't know anything about the skink thing but I do know about racing! I am a girl who is a total gear-head! I go racin' with my best friend and her husband every summer. He races 360 winged sprints. Just wanted to say hi!

It's a skink...if you catch it and keep it in a cage with a heat lamp, it will live for a LONG time. Feed it crickets and it will be happy!! My son catches them all the time. He'll keep them for awhile and play with them then let them go. Have fun!!

Hey MWBeachBum, where do you go racing? I LOVE Sprints and Midgets! Heading over to Belle Clair Saturday and Tri-City on Sunday this weekend.

Glad to know there are more racechicks out there! :)

And thanks to everyone for all the info on skinks. They are interesting little critters for sure!

catch them by the tail and the tail will break off (protection mechanism) and the skink will get away and all you're left with is the tail
