Out here in the Francis Howell School District it has been announced that school will not be cancelled today, despite the fact that the temperature is exactly 32 degrees outside with steady rain that will soon change over to more nasty stuff.

I know the schools don't like to cancel because they lose funding, but if they close before getting four hours in, won't they be wasting the taxpayers' money? It seems crazy to me that when it's this obvious that it's going to get bad out later they go ahead and have it.

It's not a call I would want to be responsible for, and I don't envy the folks who have to make this decision, but with 90 square miles in our district, and much of that in rural areas, it would seem that erring on the side of caution would be the way to go.

What do you think?

Doesn't always make sense an I agree, I wouldn't wanna be the one to make the call, but the fortunate thing is, as individuals, we can make the choice to take that risk or stay off the road.

What about the parents who send kids to school, go to work, then have to leave work to go home to get the kids and take them to a sitter??

as a parent I'll make the decision for Rockwood! The kids are staying home and I expect Rockwood to set an example of responsible decisions. Those that are in the best interest of the children. They stay home in an ice storm. Helloooooooo

I'm not sure who decides now, but when I was kid, it was decided by the district's transportation (buses) if they will go out and pick up the children. If they felt the roads were to bad, they contacted the schools. I live in Affton, and my daughter had to report to school this morning.

It is crazy to cancel school on the PREDICTION of weather. How many times have we cancelled school only to get rain or an inch or two of snow which is clear by the time school gets out. I understand ice is a totally different story. I grew up in North Dakota and I know they are more prepared for this type of weather, but school was only cancelled 3X Once for an Ice storm, once for a blizzard with 12 ft snow drifts, and once because the wind chill was -98 degrees below zero and the whole AFB was on lock down. I agree with the school to cancel when they see it as a hazard, but not on the PREDICTION of weather.

I think that if bad weather is coming, schools shouldn't be open till 12:30 or whatever time, if bad weather is coming call school off!

As a teacher and mother of a second grader in a district with many rural roads, hills, and dangerous curves... I think it depends on the roads where you live. If one child is spared harm or injury it is worth it. Believe me, I don't want snow days... they interfere with my summer vacation! What's important here is the safety of all concerned. We are one of the first districts called and I think that is wise.

Inexperienced 16 and 17 year old drivers on snow and ice scare me. So many of the high school students drive themselves to school. My daughter lost a very good friend two years ago when she lost control of her car on an icy patch and swerved into the path of a pick up truck. I live in the Wentzville School District and a lot of the rural roads can be very trecherous in snow.

I think the schools should err on the cautious side when it comes to closing schools for inclement weather.

I made the decision for Rockwood, too. I understand the concept of waiting until there actually IS weather to cancel school, but when you're talking about ice not just snow, I'd rather be wrong than take the risk.

The sleet started so I made the call at 8:15 am. Two hours later, the automated call came from the school to say that it was an early release day due to weather.

We live in the Jersey County, IL school district and the schools let out at 10 a.m. My daughter's school is located just less than a mile from our house and the school itself is located in a rural subdivision. It is very hilly out here so I am glad they decided to close because it was getting very icy and not safe for travel.

Are there any parents who can make a decision for themselves out there?! If you think it is too hazardous, call the school and tell them your kid will not be in attendance. Why are you relying on the decision of an administration on whether you send YOUR kid to school today (or tomorrow)?

i feel that schools should plan ahead. I know its hard living in Missouri and the unpredicted weather we sometimes have, but I use to go to Northwest and I remember days when we would have school and the weather would get bad...driving home was unsafe and dangerous. Now that Im in college I get to make the decision whether or not im going. Like tonight Im not going. Last year I went on the first day we had snow and I was in a terrible car accident..no deja-vu moments for me again. But, one thing I dont understand is why universities and community colleges dont close on bad weather days, many student drive there and realize their teachers didnt even show up, its not fair to us to make that dangerous drive for nothing. They should just close early.

Hmmm, Im from Chicago. School closings here used to just floor me, what we have here today is practice for us Chicago transplants. This is nothing compared to what I've driven in, shoveled, snow blowed, Etc,Etc. My daughter's school is only two minutes away by car, although the bus takes longer.I have no fear her driver will get her to and from shool in a safe manner.

Well I sure don't have a degree, but I far from being dumb. I believe in a good education and I have seen when the weatherpeople was totally wrong, about weather. But personaly I think the school dists made the wrong call today. It don't take a genesis to figure out, if the storm is in with in a 40 miles away, and it heading our way. Why would anyone put a child life in harm ways of accidents, of ice and sheeting, frozen rain. My babies our worth far more money then the funding of any school, and you can replaced, or fixed anything on this earth EXCEPT a human life DEATH, some injuries can not be repaired either.
Now they closing the schools early, having all those wonderful children in harms way. with the conditions of the weather. WHY, The funding of our schools more important then the future of the communities, our future leaders. Personally my son school was not close, but I decided to keep him and my grandson and his cousins out of Harms way. Just being a parnet, soloflyinval
