He did it... Fire Chief Sherman George has refused with orders from the Mayor of St. Louis to promote firefighters to the ranks of Captain and Battalion Chief. He cites ligitation matters and just utter disrespect to all of those on the list and to those on the St. Louis Fire Department. It's another sad day.

To revise my posting of earlier....

In an attempt to have breaking news, the media reported the false statment that Chief George had refused to proceed with promotions. As an hour has passed, Mayor Slay's blog, along with stltoday.com has reported that the Chief is going to go ahead with the promotions.... When?? Not sure... But hopefully soon. There has been much strain on this dpeartment for years and even more so for those who have been waiting to bein their new positions.

if people are qualified then promote, if they have just been coming in and clocking in and out for so many years, sorry you should not be promoted for simply showing up, that is my problem with unions, they base it on seniority, pretty sad.

If George don't promote in a timely manor what is Francis going to do?

This is just a way of George to not refuse a direct order from his superiors.
He will vacillate until Francis grabs him by the neck and forces him to promote either by threats of firing or demotion in rank and appoint another in his place.

They have to take a test and if you score at the top = that is who should be promoted. These firemen have to work as a team and I know I would not want an idiot working next to me in a crisis. Choosing someone because of race, faith or just plain butt kissing is not the way it should be handled. The Judge said this test was legal and it appears that everyone took the SAME TEST - so I do not believe there is/was an issue.

what i don't get is if a federal judge already ruled that the test wasen't"racially biased"(a real load of crap,BTW)WHY is even an issue??what a joke!

Sherman George already had a copy of the 2004 promotional list. He requested a copy from the personnel department in June 2004. Once he saw the racial make up of the list he stopped the promotion process then. Somebody's not telling the truth.

If Chief George doesn't follow the City Council and/or Mayor's requests then appropriate action needs to be taken. Chief George need not be concerned with potential litigation or current litigation - just listen to the boss. A written reprimand will be in store if not his job. Do it or lose it.

Francis is walking a tightrope. If he fires George he risk the Ire of all the suit thugs that sat at the press conference extolling the virtues of One Sherman George. As STLFD12 said he don't show his face at multi alarm fires. anyone want to know why? HE INCOMPENTENT he's a affirmative action Hire and any rank he garner was given to him vie affirmative action in the city from passed administrations. Shall I name them?
