Strange Streak of Light In Sky???

Question - did anyone see anything unusual in the sky on Saturday Aug. 23rd, 08 between 4:45 and 5:00am..???
I took my dog out in the back yard and was admiring the half bright moon when all of a sudden a bright yellowish-orange streck went from south to north and I gasped it was soo fast and bright..I have seen shooting stars before but this was close.. and was not a plane unless it was on fire and crashing..
I told my husband and it could be debris falling into the atmosphere, or a UFO hehehe.. but whatever it is I am 48 and have never seen anything like that before..

Most likely a stray fireball meteor (Not from the Perseids since they ended over a week ago.), or space debris falling into the atmosphere.

My wife and I were driving on I-40 Eastbound between Hickory and Statesville about 9:20pm on Saturday evening, August 23rd, 2008 when we observed a very bright blue-green flash that lit up an entire cloud near the horizon and lasted approximately 2 seconds. There was only the one flash. Does anyone know what this was? I did not see a streak in the sky like a meteorite and there were no thunderstorms in the area, but it appeared to light the cloud from the inside.
