i wonder what percentage of americans wait until the last minute to file taxes.

i like to get them done. i would think the people who wait would probably be the people who owe.

otherwise it seems people would want to get their money returned from the feds.

Roche - where's your grammatical etiquette? Ok, kidding (somewhat) but yes - we wait until the very last minute.

Why? We have our deductions/withholdings so that we have to pay the feds. Why should I let "them" use my money for free when I can earn an average interest rate or invest in the market and pay them when it's time.

Our friends do the opposite - they always get a huge chunk back so they file as soon as legally possible.

I don't know why but I always wanted to send my off at the last minute where you had to go downtown to drive by to drop it off. BUT I always chicken out. What if I got in a real bad accident on my way down there or something? What if I had some kind of emergency and couldn't get down there? Besides my husband always wants that money back to he can go spend it on his yearly big project.

We get ours done as soon as possible. One less thing I have to worry about. We have always received a Fed. refund. We receive a small Mo. refund and in IL. we either break even or owe a small amount depending on if Mike worked over here or not. His primary employeer is in Missouri but sometimes helps out at the local hospitals in IL as an EMT, etc.

Roche: Every time I see you, I always comment how much you look like my brother. I'll see if I cant dig up some pics of him and post. Kind of neat!

We have them prepared in plenty of time but we wait until April 15th to actually mail them in. My husband is self-employed so we always owe or just leave the overpayment in there to cover 1Q estimated.

As I had to pay, I filed mine this evening electronically. If I would have known that St. Louis County residents had another month due to the flooding, I would have waited until May 15th, lol.

You have actually until May 19th if you are in any of the counties that were declared part of the flood disaster. If you are not in one of those counties, you still may get to file by May 19th, if your tax prepared is located in one of the flood disaster counties.

Returns mailed in must have marked at the top in red, on each page something about being part of the flood.

My boyfriend waited until yesterday afternoon to even fill out his forms, then sent his sister off to mail them.
...hope he doesn't owe anything....

My boyfriend also waited until yesterday to have ME do his taxes and put them in the mail.

He will get a small refund but he owes $4 to the state.

I did my taxes back in January and got them back in February....I needed that money!
