St. Louis county sets off it's tornado sirens if a twister is reported in the next county. Good idea?  In some parts of the county it's sunny yet the siren is sounding. Will this early alert cause people to think someone is crying wolf and will they start to igrnore them orver time? Or will the early warning save more lives? What do you think?

better safe than sorry. it gives you time to secure things around the yard before the storm hits and puts you on alert (just in case).

I think it's going to be like crying wolf, people are going to think there just testing it, or just sounding it for no reason. Don't get me wrong, for people who know whats going on it's a good thing, but then again how many people don't know...

well... where I live in Jeff co (5 mi south of 141 & 21) we don't have sirens, so I don't get any warning b/c by the time the sirens would go off, our satelitte has gone out from the bad weather and we don't know what is going on anyway... however, I think that turning the sirens on b/c the county over is on is bogus, too far in advance. Scares the kids, elderly and 99% of the time, nothing happens.

Unfortunately, I am torn as to whether or not listen to any sirens that I might hear. We live outside of Edwardsville, and there are no sirens here. I depend upon my skills of watching updrafts and downdrafts more than anything else. The only time the sirens blew in NE meant that you better take cover now - here, it's an entirely different way of thinking. I know many who live in Glen Carbon and Edwardsville who tell me they ignore all the sirens. I sometimes wonder if we could have three distinguishing sirens, one to blow a watch, one to blow a warning, and one to blow an all clear. In my hometown in NE, we always blew an all-clear. People took the siren seriously, and it was only blown to be tested, or to warn when a funnel was spotted on the ground. I'm just afraid that we're going to have a bad one sometime, and lose many lives because no one takes the sirens seriously.

I never heard the sirens at home even though I am about 1 mile away. I have a NOAA weather radio next to my bed. It goes off constantly. I also warn others who don't have a weather radio about pending dangerous conditions. At work, I am known as the "weather guy!"

There was a commercial when I was a kid that had this line:
"I'd rather be a scared chicken than a dead duck."

If the sirens sound off you better believe im gonna duck and cover, even though here in oakville between telegraph and the river i cant hear the Sirens unless i am sitting at my front door with it standing open.

I also have the weather alert radio. But I like to listen to storm spotters on my scanner. I know of a warning mins. before an alert is put out. I can listen and hear the location, the action is. The spotters report back to NOAH weather via Ham radio, wind speed, hail, damage, ect. I also have a Ham license, and took spotter training, so i can report in if need be , but i enjoy listening better. An example of a great tool listening to storm spotters is one day last season, I told my wife to head to the basement, she looked at me funny and said you worry too much, 2 min later 80 mph winds hit and the power went out, things flyin all over the yard, tree limbs down. Well lets just say my wife takes my storm advise more serious. All be safe!

I say it's better to warn the people and a tornado NOT come than to NOT WARN people and a tornado appear and kill someone. I personally take the sirens very seriously. I think they go off with good cause. I DO pay attention them. Always have.

Well I think it would be good to have the sirens go off only for the county that it needs to be in not every county that it doesn't effect, than that way maybe people will take the sirens more serious when it is really needed. And will these blogs actually help us out any? Enjoying the stormy weather though.

I would hate to have set the siren off and save one life then not sound it and loose everyone!

If you choose to ignore the sires, that's just Darwin at work. They talk about severe weather outbreaks for at least a day and a half before it occurs. If people aren't smart enough to make a choice that could save their lives or their families lives, they have to live with it.
