A story that has been simmering on the internet for weeks finally hits mainstream media.  Senator John Edwards admitted to repeatedly lying during his Presidential campaign about an extra-marital affair with Rielle Hunter.

The National Enquirer has the photographic proof from when they followed him to the hotel where Edwards met the woman.

Just one more hypocrite leading a secret life while they stump for the public's support.

I think behavior like this says something about character and is a factor if you are running for or hold an elected office.  The standards are higher if you expect people to put their faith in you.

What do you think?

Is anyone really ''shocked'' by this? The guy's a politician and he's really good looking. I really don't care about what he's doing after hours. I don't think it diminishes his ''character'' or his ''ideals'' and what he ''believes in.'' He put himself in aposition to have an affair. Is the country going to fall to pieces because ANOTHER politician got caught? No. Look at Clinton. Does anyone really think he stopped ''cheating'' on Hilary even after he had to admit he had an ''affair'' while in the White House? Of course not. Cheating is pretty much just a part of life these days. I don't even understand why anyone cares very much.

Yeah, I guess morals are a thing of the past huh? Much less the sanctity of marriage, huh?

Snoopy, have any feelings for his wife going through cancer?

Yeah, I'm shocked by this!

I feel awful for his wife. He's a guy who got caught up in his own hype and thought he could get away with it.

The clue was those $400 dollar haircuts! One account said $1200. Imagine if this man was our president! Thank God he is not.

What???? A politician lying? A politician covering something up? Why....that's unheard of and everyone should be ashamed of themselves to think that a politician would do those things!

*end sarcasm warning*

Good looking is in the eye of the beholder. I don't think Edwards is good looking---he reminds me of a weasel for some reason. I guess it's his beady eyes.

Good thing he isn't a Republican huh? He would not of had that (weeks) grace period. Any thoughts on the delay? Did it maybe conflict with other Democratic events at the time? Just wondering.

I am not surprise John Edwards had an affair with another woman outside his marriage. The man is attractive and very young looking compared to his wife. With that being said, I don't condone his behavior and he should be held accountable for his actions. Most men will cheat on their wives at some point in their marriage. What happens in the dark will soon come into the light. We all must reap what we have sowed on this earth in the end. My prayers goes out to Mrs. Elizabeth Edwards who has terminal "cancer".

A substantial proportion of marriages as highlighted in the media are facades. We see these people holding hands, smiling at each other, etc when either or both are engaged in infidelity or other forms of marital rascality, have sex very infrequently, or, worse still, not at all. The institution of marriage is heavily populated with hypocrites and is a bankrupt one, in my view.

caffeinated-cow, 'I don't think Edwards is good looking---he reminds me of a weasel for some reason. I guess it's his beady eyes.'
ROTFLMAO!!

I could not have phrased it better.
Now, not only was he a two-bit ambulance chasing shyster, he can add adulterer to his pathetic resume.

myresponse said, 'Imagine if this man was our president! Thank God he is not.'
Amen, amen and AMEN!!

Wonder if he is taking any advice from Teddy K?

Right off of the top of my head, Bill and Hillary perhaps?

On another note, at least John Edwards cheated on his wife with another woman and not a man. With that being said, he must be held accountable for his actions.

Or....John McCain, perhaps? Or just about any politician you might imagine. Let's face it, gang...powerful men have always been an attraction to certain bimbos out there. Powerful men need constant stroking and wives get sick of that rather fast...so, the clingers on take advantage and move in on these politicians who fly so high they can't touch the ground....except....sometimes they do. And, when THAT happens, reality hits and the entire family is embarrassed by these dudes. I feel for Elizabeth Edwards...she seems to be a great wife for mr. eye candy..and, he is handsome....but, unfortunately, not very smart.

I don't know what the all the hubbub is about. Not like this is the first politician that has ever stepped outside his marriage, certainly won' t be the last. Frankly stories like this make me sick because I personally believe these issues don't belong on the front of any magazine nor is it any of our business what happens in another couples marriage. Cheating, although I don't condone it, seems to be the one thing this country just can't get over when it happens. But the thing is, plenty of people are doing things that are wrong and just as bad as that everyday. How many people live together without the bonds of matrimony and think that is A OK? But to some of us, thats just as bad as what Edwards did. Yet some of those same people would be the first to act as if committing adultry is wrong. Please people, get over it and move on. It's not like its ever going to stop. It's been going on for years, will continue to go on for years and nothing will change.
As far as people thinking it says something for his character...please, look what we have in the office now. I guess people forgot his past aggressions once he was sworn in.

I want to play the Mr. Oprah approach to this and tell you all that John Edwards is the TRUE victim here.

This poor man has been through a lot in the last few years. 2 failed presidential attempts, a wife suffering with terminal cancer and the constant pressure to keep up his beautiful appearance. It is Rielle Hunter who is to blame for all this. This Evil Succubus took advantage of him.

LOL I can’t go on, my sides hurt too much.

Edwards is nothing but lowlife scum to do this to his wife while she's fighting for her life. He has committed the ultimate betrayal. If she can't trust him, the voters certainly can't. I don't hold politicians to higher standards than anyone else. I've already kicked one cheating husband to the curb, and would send the current one packing in a heartbeat if I found out he was cheating. No second chances here. If she has any self-respect, she'll dump his sorry behind and take everything he owns! She deserves much better.

Speaking about this in a non-partisan manner )I admit to being a Democrat, but am looking at this objectively)
I am disheartened by the fact that Mr. Edwards could possibly think this would not be found out and trying to make a run for the presidency anyway. I am a believer in the words, "Judge not, lest ye be judged." I cannot judge this man for what he did, I can only be disappointed in him for doing it and trying to cover it up. One thing he should understand about politics, whatever you do will be found out. Morality in this country is on a very precarious precipice. Some of his loudest detractors will one day be found out a s doing something equallyy egregious. I make no excuses for him or his actions. He chose his course and must now live with the aftemath. Perhaps this will be alesson to us all that our politicians are not angels nor demigods, but men who succumb to the same failures as us all.
One last thing, I hope this will not become one of those issues that people use to continue divisive politics. Right now this country needs to focus on solving its real problems and not those issues which mean absolutely nothing to our everyday life. I urge people to stay focused on the issues that will impact our family, our country and the world.

I think Mr. Edward's own comment that it was he had become narcissitic and thought he was above everyone else because he was in the media spotlight during the 2004 campaign is very scary. It makes one wonder, what he would have done (or thought he could get away with) had he made it through to the White House.

We dodged a bullet, folks. Consider ourselves very lucky.

And as is the case whenever these high profile people get caught, he goes on national t.v. to admit his behavior was wrong. And to say that timing is the only reason why he can't be this woman's baby's father suggests that during their time together he was practicing unprotected sex. So, he wasn't concerned about pregnancy OR some sort of STD.

myresponse,
I find most stories are on the web for a few days before hitting the mainstream media. As far as the Edwards story, I think The Enquirer had the goods and other media were reluctant to go with stories based on the Enquirers' proof and methods.
I don't know if it would have been different for a Republican given the same circumstances.
But I do think that the mainstream media will be less reluctant to sit on similar future stories.

I'm Rich Murphy, the Senior Web Producer for myfoxdc.com.I've done just about every job in a TV newsroom on my way to this new position of Senior Web Producer. For 15 years, starting in 1984, I carried a video camera on my shoulder and around the world. Most of my career has been spent in Tampa with a 3 year stint from 87-89 in Charlotte. Moving up the ranks from editor to photojournalist allowed me to experience things most people only get to watch on TV. I have tried to take that experience through my stints as Chief Photojournalist, Assignment Editor, Field Producer, Reporter, Executive Producer of Special Projects and Managing Editor to contribute to news coverage that resonates with viewers. I have covered big events like the San Francisco Earthquake, Hurricane Andrew, Presidential Campaigns, Political Conventions, Woodstock (the 20th anniversary, not the original!) Johnny Carson's last week on TV and roamed the sidelines for Buccaneers and Gator games. But meeting the people affected by the news has always been the best part of the job. I have always felt being exposed to all the triumphs and tragedies of people helps me better understand the type of genuine stories that viewers respond to. I believe the web is where people will be going to get the news that connects to their lives, on their schedule. We hope myfoxdc.com will be your first stop as you look for those stories.
