Redbird's Drive-by

Here's some raw video from a private reception prior to The Press Club of Metropolitan St. Louis event honoring broadcaster Joe Buck. This event was Wednesday night at the Ritz in Clayton.

What is extremely troubling is how a person at the event, Joan Quicksilver,

obstructed local television crews from doing their job. The crews were at the event to talk with St. Louis Cardinals manager, Tony LaRussa. Earlier in the day LaRussa plead guilty to drunk driving. Here's a link to the police video from the arrest. Back in March, police in Jupiter, Florida found Tony asleep at the wheel of his SUV at an intersection. His foot was on the break. The video speaks for itself.

Back to the Ritz. Reporters wanted to talk with Tony about his plea. Joan Quicksilver had other ideas. This is a woman who's bio says she was honored by The National Federation of Press Woman with its Quest Award for Outstanding Professionalism in Journalism at ceremonies in 2005.

The bio also says, In 2001, she received The Press Club of Metropolitan St. Louis’ “President’s Award” for outstanding performance in media and community relations. She was inducted into The Catfish Club, the highest honor bestowed by the Press Club of Metropolitan St. Louis, for distinguished service in the public relations field.

So how does a woman so recognized for her work as a journalist explain her obstruction to journalists working on a story? To make it worse, her actions took place at a Press Club event. Why is this woman trying to quiet and stop the press? Isn't the press club about building a better press? In fact the press club says,

The Press Club is a professional, social and charitable organization of people who make, cover and influence the news.

It is right there on the website.

This isn't the first time Quicksilver has played the heavy at a press club event. I found this item from Romenesko at poynter.org.

In the 2003 column it says, "When the journalists arrived, they were met by one of the event's planners, Joan Quicksilver, a Press Club official and local public relations person.

"Quicksilver told the journalists they could not enter. She backed that up by producing Ritz security guards to escort the journalists from the party in the hotel's main ballroom."

So let me get this straight, so long as the local journalists agree with the press club, or award winning journalist Joan Quicksilver, then it is fine to publish, but disagree and no access allowed. Sounds more like China or Iran than St. Louis.

UPDATE, FRIDAY, NOV. 30: Deb Peterson mentions this brouhaha in her column Friday morning.

Hey Shawn...were the news crews invited to this event? Were you on public or private property?

I think that all news stations are hardup for a story and Larussa's DWI is sort of history. It's just old news - show us some breaking news!

I've always wondered why it's called the "Press Club" since there are not any WORKING members of the local Press or Media who are members (a bit too $$$$).

Joan's connection could be that her son is an executive at FOX Entertainment in L.A..

Biker:
It's not old news because the video was released that evening. Not one of us at Fox 2 enjoys showing video of this nature, it is part of the job.

I only hope it will be the video in the back of everyone's mind this Christmas season as they prepare to leave parties.

Maybe, just maybe it will keep some legally drunk drivers off of the road. Stay safe.

I would be a mess if I were a news reporter! It would take just one time of someone like Joan Quicksilver to talk to me that way, and I would crumble!!

Perts

I watched the video. The event was held on private property with public people. Tell me, just what did that crew want? Another Forgive me I have sinned statement?
Your quest for filling airtime at the expense of another human that made a mistake and is going to pay for that mistake boarders on intrusion, and its not what the licensing agreement with the FCC mandates your TV station to do. I wonder if the same thoughts About Dick Ford was used when his Son was involved in the death of another human being. Did your station continue to bring that story to the front?

Pertz...the story on Larussa is boring me. Why don't you guys dig deeper into the I-64 crash that killed the Uhl girls? I am still wondering why it's been a week now and the video hasn't been released.

As for his inability to say the ABC's - someone should have requested this in the 5th inning of any Cardinals game - he might not know his ABC's!

Fox 2 - when you ran this story as "top stories" - Channel 4 was running breaking news. This happens on rare occasion but it did this week. Turn those police scanners on, get Elliott Davis pumped up - go out and get that information that I and many other Fox 2 viewers like to watch - BREAKING NEWS.

As for this blog and it's orginal intent - it sounds like people were trespassing?

Yeah, there's not much more to say. Let it go!

Unfortunately John, when it comes down to it, it won't change a thing!

Okay, I'm not from 'here' so I don't know the players (except for LaRussa who used to manage the A's) but I don't get it. So I'll only speak as an outsider:

In the original post it says 'it's a private reception honoring Joe Buck'. If I was throwing an expensive private party at the press club, I wouldn't be letting reporters in to press a guest about unrelated issues, either.

Because then the private reception that I was throwing has now turned into a 'pepper La Russa with questions party' not one that was 'honoring Joe Buck'. Do that, you might as well pack it up and go home before it starts.

Which is not to say, don't ask La Russa questions...Try to get him before or after the party, fine. He's a public figure, I'm sure that he's used to this by now. And the press is free to do what they want in that regard.

But to bring this woman's credentials into it is like saying 'hey lady you were in the press, you're not allowed to have a private party where a controversial figure is attending because we'll crash it'.

But even with that, you're free to try to enter and this woman is free to say no to it.

'We have a job to do" is fine. But a private citizen is free to throw a party and not have it televised.

A news release was sent with a "request for coverage". To then decide what can and cannot be asked by the media seems disingenous. That's the point. How is it that Wash U sends an advisory requesting coverage for an announcement on a vice presidential debate coming to campus. Good news for Wash U, right? But when a female student is attacked on campus and a news agency goes to cover the story, security guards for the university aggressively push the media off campus. Can you have it both ways? Isn't the story on the attack important to the public?

How can an organization founded to support the local press obstruct the local press? An open and free press is just that - open and free. If the press club or person associated with the press club is going to obstruct or deny access, then it is no longer a press club. Or at least one that supports a free and open press. If you support Joan Quicksilver, or pay her company money, or talk like her, or think like her, or live like her then you are allowed access. But if she doesn't agree with you, then no access - even though she's representing and a member of the press club. You can't have it both ways.

It's like starting a Firefighters Club and being stopped at the door when there's a big fire burning inside. Sorry, you can't go in and fight this blaze Mr. Firefighter.

Did I hear Larussa say, "Toast" on his one sentence comment? If my ears don't deceive me I heard him say toast (hence: drink). I don't think he needs to be drinking anytime soon. And, he needs to hire a designated driver.

It's amazing how Fox 2 and others in the media will claim censorship when they can't get a story, yet they practice it everyday. Have you been censored on this blog for example? It was a PRIVATE event and FOX 2 had no business even being there. I would have had them arrested for trespassing.

I've worked in this town for almost two years and never even heard of the St. Louis Press Club until right now, which speaks volumes about its influence.
Quicksilver acted as an obstructionist and is anathema to the profession.
I wonder if "AVOID THEM AT ALL COSTS" is the advice she gives her clients?

I agree with your views on this story, this woman seems to be a bit too snooty, wanting only what she wants for her cause, but not supporting those that actually support the causes by allowing the press she requested. She knew that LaRussa was going to be there (he'd already RSVP'd. What the heck did she expect? Even I know that you should always be prepared for "what can happen" when something like this happens. Sheesh.

I wish people would realize that this story is far from over. As long as the stands are filled with those that consume alcohol, there are issues of drinking and driving going on. My ex SO was one of the worst, didn't matter if the alcohol was free when we were in one of the suites or if he had to pay out of pocket . . . he could not drive when leaving. Fortunately for him, for over 7 years I served as his designated driver . . . within a few months of our break up he drove his SUV off the road, hit a tree, and rolled down an embankment. He's currently serving 2 years on supervised probation. He could have killed another person.

FOX, I urge you to do some undercover work at the stadium next year and try to get people to wake up to the dangers associated with no limits at the sporting events. It is more than just banning alcohol from the locker room and flights, it is about saving lives of the fans. I would be willing to serve in this study of sports fans . . . You don't have to show their faces . . . just watch how many times an individual goes and buys a beer (my ex used a particular stand, depending on where our seats were).

I support

you at FOX 100% here. Tony needs to be talking to the media and to ownership (along with AB and other suppliers of alcohol) about responsibility of making sure their fans get home safe. This drinking and driving is only going to get worse with the addition of mixed drinks and wine coolers being served.

I know this is a bit off the subject, but at the same time, it isn't.

When I've attended the United Way Press thing at the Botannical Garden I find it useless. That is, until the luncheon. This is the time when I, along with 8 or so other non-profit leaders, sit at a table with a member of the press. Sit down, have a bite, and share with the media who is doing what in and around St. Louis to help those in need.

It is very difficult for non-profits to get media unless they are the Red Cross, United Way, Salvation Army (or one of the other Big Dogs in town). I can tell you, people know who those big dogs are and what they do.

After we aired our non-profits info on 88.1 we got about 20 calls from people who needed help. So, why can't we have a sit and chat session with the local press and let them learn who we are so that on days, such as Mental Health Awareness Day, you can promote upcoming events linked to it outside of MIMH, MHA of St. Louis, DMH, St. Patrick's Center, etc. Learn who your viewers are . . . chat with the non-profits so your viewers can get assistance. We welcome you. (we're not snooty, ask Channel 11 who did a spot on or center a few years back). Many of us are struggling to meet the need, operating on pennies, but providing high quality services.

Your viewers are our clients. Think about it.

Ok, here is my two cents worth on this!!!!

First of all, when this tape came available to the media, in which, the police department released it to the media, the first station that I heard talk about this was KMOV-4 (at 5pm). In 2 minutes time, I heard several times about the video on channel 4, and they made many statements, that you can view the video on their website.
I was driving in town, around 5:45 that night, and I heard an update on the radio, on what's coming up on News 4 St. Louis, at 6pm. The first thing I heard, was about this.
While watching during the 5 o'clock news, I didn't see much if any on this on Fox 2, I really didn't see much until Fox 2 News @ 9.
Now, I'm not putting down Fox 2, for not covering it as much as KMOV did, because I think they did a fine job at, but my point is that it was stated that that is all Fox 2 has/is been doing.
With me being in the news business, and this is a weather guy talking, when news breaks, it's news.
Just take it with a grain of salt, if you don't like what you see on the news, change the channel, and don't gripe about it. News happens everyday, and it won't ever stop.
An in my opinion, which you can't give when your in the news business, but the whole idea of them not talking, La Russa, etc, was because he doesn't want to face the fact, that everyone is going to know, and I'm sure, he has put down a lot of fans, aka little ones.
KUDOS to Fox 2 for doing such a great job!!!
Keep it up.
And like I said before, if you don't like what you see, change the channel, because there is always somethi

It is your job to break the news when you recieve it. I understand that. But... I think that Tony has been put through enough.

I also think that it was rude to attempt to take the "lime light" away from Joe Buck's night and put your focus on Tony!

You were true "party crashers" in my eyes.
