The Schankman Cometh

Hey bloggers,

I am looking for a good What's the Deal story that is "holiday" related.

Any strange or interesting holiday traditions or displays you know of that need a little explanation?

Let me know... and let me be the first to say... HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!  (actually even though it is only November 6th, I am probably not even close to the first to say it--- but that's a topic for another day...)

I am sure this holiday season we'll see tons of politicians out at the local soup kitchens, ringing the bells, etc. Why is it only then they are there? Where are they the other 364 days of the year? What have they done for them lately.

Another option

Why is it that non-profit organizations that receive funding from United Way are not allowed to hold their own fundraisers during their drive time? (Big non-profit blackmail I tell ya). By the way, we're not a UW agency, so we have our fundraisers whenever we want. But I find it assanine that UW's mandate is forced down the throat of so many smaller non-profits that really don't get much funding from UW.

I always wonder WHAT'S THE DEAL with the Anheuser Busch Tree that looks like a dog peed on the lights. (It is at the Broadway end of their display). I have never seen that color of lights anywhere but at Anheuser Busch. Is that color especially made for them?

In Fenton off of Hawkins road is a house that must have a million lights or more. I liked to know what motivated the man who started it. They had a live Santa on weekend nights. I heard he died and someone comes over so the tradition lives on.

VBallR. Even though you donate to UW through a payroll deduction you can still designate who that money goes to; however, the way I understand it if you do so, it really will not benefit the charity and could actually hurt them. Each charity through UW has X number of dollars set for that charity. If you stipulate that you want, for example, the boy scouts to received your donation the amount you specify goes first to the X number of dollars already alloted to the organization. So, in other words, the designated funds go to the Scouts, but anything that they deposit (freeing up other funds) will now go into general revenue.

Sometimes it is just better to send a check to the agency directly and keep UW out of it.

paul I would like to know what is the deal with all of the pushing and shoving that occurs during the holiday shopping seasons? you would think that all the parties involved would be polite and considerate during the holidays. and what is the deal with the above mentioned parties being so very rude with the cashiers and customer service workers??

It seems to me that this may be the our last year to celebrate the holidays, because, it may be offensive to a few! I am thinking that a law will come out soon that will "ban" our holidays!

It could end up that we are fined to celebrate the birth of Jesus. OH, nevermind...we all forgot why we celebrate Christmas. It is now simply a time to get into debt and give unto others what we can't afford to give. LOL JMO

What's the deal with everyone starting their shopping at the last minute? Why not shop year round as I do and avoid all the "Mr. Scrooge's" during the holidays.

They just wait until 2 weeks before christmas then have to do it all at once. (2 days before christmas if you're a man! LOL! Just kidding guys !)

freckld1 pushing and shoving is how you get into the holiday spirit of shopping. stores let you earn bonus points, double points if your shoving gets you and the store featured on the news.

mancillas just think maybe they will arrest and send to jail those who celebrate christmas. think free room, board, and free meals. just pretend you are at a holiday inn express visiting long lost relatives.

now on a serious note, i like last minute shopping. if i start too early it feels like any other shopping day. i also wrap the night before. now i use to put a tree up the thanksgiving weekend but now i wait to the last minute on that too, don't know why.

NOT a big deal, but I would like to add a note to let everyone know, HELP A CHILD this Christmas. Our car club does the SANTAS HELPERS. we all bring toys to the last meeting of the year and they are delivered to SANTAS HELPERS, to distribute to needy families. SO every child can have a happy day.
I grew up in a poor family and now can help those in need. IT will lift your hearts to help a family in need this HOLIDAY SEASON.

What about the Christmas pickle? I know the general sense of the tradition but I think a lot of people just think it's a weird ornament for the tree. I think it's funny to hang a pickle on a tree and if I played by the rules of whoever finds the pickle first, my boys would have the tree torn down before any gifts are open. So where did it start and why?

I've been hanging out at Fox 2 since I was a kid, and my mom used to drag me to be in the audience at The Charlotte Peters show. Now they pay me to show up. Amazing. Even more amazing, I've been here now for 23 years. I'll keep you posted on what I'm working on, offer the occassional odd thought, and since I enjoy live theater and dining out (does it show?) when I see something or eat somewhere wonderful I'll tell you about it. My two dogs might offer an occassional comment as well. (that's Luca on the left, and Fanny, the little sassy one.) Let the blogging begin! Luca says "arf."
