It's been over a month now since the Missouri Department of Transportation turned on this experiment along I-270.  MoDOT is claiming this will keep traffic flowing smoothly on the state's busiest highway. They also said that reducing the speed limit during peak times will reduce the stop-and-go traffic that can increase travel times and the likelihood of accidents.

Sooooo, how has it been so far?

(In My Opinion)

NO

Traffic moves at it's own pace during rush hour.

It really doesn't matter what the speed is 270 north staring at 55 is always at a crawl from 7am till 10am so putting up those signs is a waste.(my Opinion)

I don't go that way so they don't affect me. If I did drive that way my main concern would be that of speed limit consistency. I cannot see them working immediately after a "bottleneck" has freed up and/or if an instant problem occurs.

I believe it's a matter of MoDot's laziness and lack of knowledge on how to truly fix the traffic control problems.

I experienced a speed limit change about a month ago. The biggest problem is that 40 is the lowest it went. It doesn't help at all when traffic has come to a COMPLETE STOP!It just means when you get rear ended, MAYBE it won't be so hard! LOL.

I cannot see these signs working for the most part. Unless they have someone monitoring (not a device) what is going on ahead of the sign there's really no way to warn drivers of a complete stop. I think it's a revenue producing tool and you'll see a lot more traffic cams in the area actually shooting/videoing you speeding thus mailing your citation directly to HOME! It's all about revenue and has little to do with safety.

Well, if your asking me I can say this. I do not drive to MO unless I have an invitation. But, I would love to see Billboards with What you learned in Driver's ED but Forgot.

I don't see a difference, but then again I usually have to drive across the street to go to work..... Or I simply walk down stairs to the computer.....

I love living away from the Rat Race.........

No help.....anyone who actually has driven on 270 since it opened knows that NO speed limit signs have ever meant anything. Traffic always has run at its own pace. Why would MODOT think electronic signs would make a difference?....ooops...MODOT..there's the magic word. What a waste of money. $900,000 as I recall. What if they would have put their effort into timing stoplights on Manchester, Lindbergh, Telegraph, 141.....now THAT would have made a difference.

Honestly these signs get lost in all the road construction! I don't see a difference at all!

Happy Birthday Patrick!

Peace, Jana

I decided to try a little experiment the other day, and set my cruise control to exactly what the sign said. Even though I stayed in the right lane, I was still tailgated and cars flew past me like I wasn't moving. So it would appear that the signs are a waste of money.

As far as I am concerned, NO!!
I have been along that stretch of 270 a few times, whether its in the North end or South.
People are NOT obeying it whatsoever. I have tried, but I have to speed up or end up having some idiot clobber my backside.

I was on 270 other day, its nothing new for peeps to do 80 on the COR Bridge. I was doing 65 and was getting passed as if I was standing still.

What happens if you pass the sign when it says 60 and then it drops to 40 how would you know?

Like I said 270 is always packed in the morning and those signs are a waste. They could have spent that money on fixing the roads that MODOT says they dont have! (My Opinion)

Variable Speed Limits??? On I-270 cars travel as fast as they have room to travel...less cars, faster traffic...more cars, slower traffic. I-270 had variable speed limits before the signs.:)
