Green beans and a tube sock

My personal trainer is friends with some bouncers at a few nightclubs here in St. Louis.  In the middle of my workout this morning, he tells me that ladies purses are now being checked as they enter the bar--for a can of green beans and a tube sock. 

It's a form of self-defense where they assemble the two once in the bar by dropping the can into the sock, then when they feel threatened, they whip it out , swing it around like a lasso and whack the guy giving them a hard time. 

Just imagining this in the bar made me laugh hysterically (especially when trying to lift heavy weights), but after some thought, I wanted to bring this up to the bloggers and get your thoughts on it.

What happened to the days of mace?  Is it the economy that's causing us to come up with "cheaper" ways of self-defense? Some ladies must have performed this ninja magic enough times so bars are finally making it their policy to prevent it.

never heard of it...but I dont go to bars anymore so I guess I wouldnt have...lol

POB: I've heard of this...in my days it was usually a large BANANA in a tube sock....LOL and was used only for marketing purposes..at bars!

LOL. How interesting! I too am a personal trainer and am glad it's not just me who shares the "life and times stories -- and oh what stories! -- of a personal trainer" with his clients!

I have some insight on this -- yet am hesitant to admit this in writing [thank god I have no photos of myself on the blog -- ha, knew there was a good reason for keeping my face unknown! Um, this is not a new practice!

Way back in 2002 or 2003, I was a personal trainer for several of the ladies at PTs and the Hustler club and other strip joints on the east side of town... and when they were out and about themselves at the bars and nightclubs, they packed the same and other deadly weaponry!

I'm all for it -- and this is not only cheap, it is extremely practical and can be wielded with great force, irrelevant of one's strength, and its very effective -- it will immediately force the attacker to back off, and it causes intense pain. And if the gal knows where to make impact, one blow can put the largest, strongest man on the ground in seconds. If not kill him.

Another weapon I'm surprised the bars -- and airlines -- don't screen for, are ball point pens with a long nail inserted instead of the ink cartridge. Talk about an effective tool for inflicting serious damage to the face.

what happened to brass knuckels like we used to use...lol, just kidding,... from hermann, we dont worry about being attacked n the bars, but occasionaly it happens but since every one knows everyone, its usually brought under control soon..when i read the title ya had up, green beans and a tube socks, i almost puked, i thought ya were making soup...i know what it is for a guy to take a tube sock into a tanning room though...lol

Hmmmm. If you are going someplace that requires you to take defensive weapons, perhaps you shouldn't go there in the first place?

havent' seen it in the bars in my area ..or not yet anyway. Do have one bar that i stop in at times...you most likely could get in a good fight if you like....don't know why tho....but hey maybe its just us horseshoers they're trying to pick on....several of us stop there, can't help it if the ladies like us...lol.

I always thought it was rolls of nickles in a sock. I guess green beans are cheaper.

I'm 6' tall and my husband is 6'2" construction worker...we don't need no stinkin green beans. LOL
