The nation’s oldest and largest frequent flier program quietly announced on June 1 that anyone who does not earn or redeem miles at least once every 18 months will lose all the banked miles in their accounts. Previously, the time limit was three years.

I received a notice via e-mail from American Airlines three days later about this change.

Read the New 18-Month Mileage Retention Policy here.

It was also featured on MousePrint.org.

It doesn't take effect until December 17th, but it's retroactive, so if your AAdvantage program hasn't been active since June 15, 2006, on December 17th of this year, you'll lose them!

MousePrint.org suggests an easy way to earn miles (and keep your account alive) is to buy something online at a store that gives AA miles with every purchase, or donate a minimum of 250 miles to certain charities.

If you lose all your miles, American Airlines will generously allow you to buy them back for $50 per 5000 miles, plus a $30 processing fee.

What do you think about all this?

Sounds like the time I lost my comp time. I just returned from my wedding/honeymoon only to find out that the company removed all comp time for salaried employees and they had done even one better, used vacation time instead of comp time for my two weeks off. I lost 1500 hours, my boss lost over 5000.

Airline miles . . . well I don't fly that much so they do me no good. But hey, can you transfer them to a charity if you are not going to use them? Perhaps the Ronald McDonald House could get them and they could use them to bring families to Childrens/Cardinal Glennon to be with their ailing kids. Worth checking into.

What are we going to do??? I don't want to waste my miles on stupid teen magazines. Perhaps I could use them to buy toothpaste at the airport in the future since I can't carry it on anymore?

It sounds like American Airlines is taking AAdvantage of their customers. (groan)

Other than profiteering what could be the motive here? How expensive could it possibly be for them to keep a simple record of customer miles. All I can figure is that their frequent flyer program, along with all the credit card and store deals to earn miles with purchases has been too successful and they are worried about how much impact all those miles could have on their future bottom line (while ignoring how much those miles deals improved their past bottom line).

I don't fly often, but I have an AAdvantage account (that I have had for years). I also have a credit card that allows me to earn AA miles when I use it. When I do need to fly I choose American Airlines because of the miles I can earn, even though they are often not the cheapest flight available. After this decision I see no reason to continue doing this and I am on the hunt for a "cash rewards" credit card to replace my now useless miles earning card.

Hey POB....thanks goodness I fly frequently...Although I used to fly only American Airlines, I have found a direct flight to Canada through Air Canada for about the same price as AA...Guess I will have to make sure I use AA when flying within the states to keep my miles...
have a great day..

I dont fly anywhere these days....But they aren't the only ones... Did you know that all those Gift certificates that you get from restaurants at christmas and other occasions have expiration dates and they are paid for with cash.... Found this out at Red Lobster... had to put dinner on credit card because the 100 red lobster dollars we had had expired.....

Hey Patrick
I'm not a frequent flyer and not a huge fan of flying in general, but my sister is and I will pass this information on to her.

Oh and I will be getting on a plane in July so pray for me! Like I said NOT a huge fan. LOL

Peace Jana<3

Patrick, I used to always fly American but, when we flew to Las Vegas last week we flew on Frontier. I think I have found the best air carrier..... Frontier was more comfy, more room, and tv's... It cost ya $5 on a credit card only no cash but, I liked it much better... American is doing what every airline has done or will do... Jip you the consumer out of anything and everything.

PerkyPolok....those items are fine. You are limited on LIQUIDS...I think the total amount is two ounces...must fit in a ziplock baggie??

I think this is RIDICULOUS of AA!! I can see if they choose to inflict this rule on all NEW miles and customers...but they should honor the old rules with their existing customers and miles! That would make me NOT fly that airline if I lost my miles!

Great, so not only will you suffer American Airlines poor on time record and horrible customer service, you'll also lose the only incentive they offer. Fly South West or America West, lower fares, less miles to gain free tickets and fewer restricted dates.
