So what does everyone think of the taxes we have to pay on gasoline?  Of course, nobody likes paying them.  But do you think it would help if the federal and state government would temporarily suspend taxes on fuel?  Would it stimulate the economy?  Posted below are the taxes that drivers in Illinois and Missouri must pay on gasoline, as well as the federal gasoline tax.  source: gaspricewatch.com

  • Illinois:  19 cents per gallon gas (21.5 diesel) + 6.25% sales tax + 0.3% tax on underground storage tanks.  Diesel fuel taxes are 27.5 cents per gallon for commercial highway users.

  • Missouri:  17 cents per gallon for gas and diesel.  This includes the 6 cent per gallon "temporary" increase adopted in 1992.  It was originally set to expire this year.  In 2002, Gov. Holden signed legislation extending the increase indefinitely.

  • Federal:  18.4 cents per gallon.  Collected at purchase, in addition to any state or local taxes.

A lot of people like being taxed. They love ballparks, healthcare for non workers, food stamps for lazy people, etc, etc, etc, What about the poor and my god THE CHILDREN YOU BULLY.

The gas tax in Illinois goes to our roads. So to me taking ot would really defeat the purpose.

Cutey - As a former IL resident, I didn't mind paying a little more for better roads. However, with a portion of the gas tax based on a percentage, that means when the price of gas goes up, so do the taxes. So what is the state of IL doing with the extra tax revenue? Might be worth looking into.

I also don`t agree with lowering gas taxes, you are robbing Peter to pay Paul. What I don`t understand,is why do we talk about how terible gas prices are, being so high, yet, there is so many simple way`s to cut gas consumption and save lives. Why do we have car`s that exceed the speed limit?.I`ve driven for a delivery company that had a speed control governor. They could adjust it for any speed. when gas was only 36 cent a gallon.. Save them big buck`s.I wish the car company`s offer them as an option, when my kid`s started driving. I could have set it for 45 miles an hour an not worried so much..

They'll just use it as an excuse not to fix the roads if they don't have the tax money, they won't take it from the general fund it's been skimmed to tight by the crooks.

The problem with doing this is twofold. You cut the gasoline taxes, then where does the money for highway/bridge maintenance come from?

Of course, they would let the highways and bridges get worse than they already are, and tell us that they'll have to reinstate the taxes at a higher rate to make up for work that's been postponed.

No, the answer is to force them to spend the dollars collected in gas tax on roads/bridges and quit dumping it away on the stupid things like mass transit that doesn't work. The other solution is to drill, drill, drill!

I much rather pay a gas tax than a more expensive user toll. Either way you will be paying for using the roads.

But with any public work organization we also need independent audits of how the money is being spent. Plus if a contractor says they can do a project for x amount of money then that is what they get. But if the project fails then the contractor is responsible for repairs at their expense. Meaning a bridge or road comes with a warranty for so many years and are responsible for repairs. So cutting costs on amount of materials or quality of materials is not an option.

Did you know or do care that German roads are up to 12 inches thicker than American roads? Plus their roads and bridges also last nearly twice as long as our. When the Germans do need to repair the road they close off sections and replace the road from the foundation up. Hot patch is a waste of time, effort, and material.

snoopydad - agree on the audits, however............

In WWII the Germans had a better tank. Able to take direct hits from American tanks, bigger gun, diesel vs gasoline power, but in the end the Shermans were able to defeat them. The lesson here is that the Germans tend to over-engineer (and overly expense) things that they do. The autobahn is but one example of how they overengineer a simple road.

My Dad always said everything he picked up from the Germans from the pistols to the pots were better than American made, but we had more of them. Go Patton.
