There are no words for this one.

MTV has launched a lyric contest. A lyric contest in which the subject matter of the lyrics has to be on the importance of HIV testing. Hip-hop/R&B singer Common will sing the winner's lyrics.

I don't know. Maybe it's just me, but this competition just seems silly. Maybe I'm taking the rules with a strict interpretation, but I think this contest may be a flop.

Then again, I could be wrong. This thing could really take off-- if the rules are loosely interpreted. I just don't see a worthwhile song coming out of this.

Somehow, this reminds me of the sort of sensationalism that happened in the 80's when HIV/AIDS exploded on the media and we saw things like LiveAid. I'm not saying that these things were bad. They were actually helpful. I think they really raised awareness about the disease.

But somehow, this contest still seems a little hokey to me.

Any thoughts?

Well the thought of getting the message out is good but I don't understand their reasoning of limiting the contest to the age range of 13 to 25..... I guess they want more out of it than just the good deed.....

I don't see an issue with the contest. If it gets the word out then hey go for it. I don't think this has anything to do with a song or poem persay. I think it is a way to educate this particular age group of people. They find out about it through research as they write the poem or lyrics.

Mr. W. I would think they limited the contest to ages 13-25 because those are the people that are most at risk of getting HIV.

They lost my interest when they stopped playing videos and filled thier day with 90% of reality shows.....
It looks like they are targeting the young sexualy active risk takers, good motive. Its getting attention, even we are talking about it.
