Why does coffee smell better than it taste?

So, this morning shift has claimed yet another victim - me. And now I'm resorting to the cure of coffee. It's not so bad, but I just don't see what the big deal is.
I know tons of people who "have to have it."
My grandmother used to be that way. It was a bit funny sometimes because she really couldn't function if she didn't have that first cup.
Then, she'd only take a few sips and be done. I know, right.

So, what's the big deal? Tell me what you guys like.
I, being a new coffee drinker, dumped some type of MilkyWay Moco latte, sugar and creme into my cup (hey, at lease I'll be awake ;-).

Holla at me!

Vera it is the caffiene.
I never like coffee to drink but did love to smell it perk. The smell is so good.
But I had a little coffee with my cream and sugar.
One day I drank it black and I have been hooked ever since.
I like the taste of GOOD Coffee black.
Don't care for the fancy stuff.
But it is the caffeine that gets people going.
Drink a soda it would do the same.
I hear anyway.
We drink coffee all day long ,all year long.We drink lite most the time here which is suppose to have 1/2 the caffiene.
We Carry a thermos with us when we go anywhere.Even to town.
Just a coffee junkie is all.We don't drink soda or tea.Just water and coffee.

A little coffee with my cream and sugar also....and NO....won't drink it black; yuck; lol;
smells good though. Don't like the fancy flavor stuff either; never been to starbucks; never will.
I was gonna say; coffee should taste like coffee and not choc. or carmel. or what have you; but then I realized; lol; that my coffee mostly just tastes like cream and sugar:) with a lil coffee flavor. So, guess I can't say that...can say; that mine is a lot cheaper; than choc. flav. or carmel. etc, etc.
But when you're really cold Ms. Vera; and NOT at work; try a little Bailey's Irish Creme in your coffee...MMMM GOOD:)

Good morning, Ms.Vera!

Gotta have my coffee! Strong, straight up black coffee. My husband calls it John Wayne coffee. That's okay, that's why he has his own coffeemaker- so he can make his weak read-the-newspaper-thru-it coffee. I don't drink a whole lot though. By 9am or so I'm finished, that's why I have a 4 cup maker & he has a 12 cup maker.

Occasionally when I'm out I add some half & half, but no other flavors. I don't do fancy!

It will grow on you..... If it comes from good rich fresh beans I can even drink it black... I like a little french vanilla creme in mine... hazelnut is good also..... On a cold morning like this Half and Half (Hot Chocolate and Coffee) is good too.....

But sitting and drinking coffee with a friend makes for great morning conversation....

I love the smell of coffee! I drink my coffee black. It don't have to be any certain brand or anything. I usually drink one cup of store brand instant per day. Just one hot cup to get me going in the morning. I don't even think it's about the caffeine, I like the flavor and the heat on my throat!

Hi Vera - the smell of coffee can be good only if it's a great coffee. Starbucks (aka: Seattles Best) are both good brands. If you buy a bag of each from the store you'll find that Seattles Best is more finely ground and tastes much better.

It sounds like you need to do some coffee tasting! Go to your nearest Starbucks (or Java Girls if you wish...LOL) and try a variety of coffees (and combos) - I think you find your niche somewhere.

Me...I'll take a Venti Cafe Mocha, no fat milk, no whipped cream...please.

All coffee is not the same. Some are bitter some not, some have a high leval of caffeine some not. There are so many differant ones like there are apples. The coffee most served in the U.S. is as much as double the caffeine as some european and other coffees. It is hard to find and can be pricey but blue mountain (jamaican) and kona(hawiian) are by far the best in the world (not just my opinion). don't be fooled by so called "blends" as they only contain 10% (if your lucky maybe 1 in ten beans ended up in your cup) you will not taste the differance. Go for the 100%(again hard to find). I drink 100% Kona coffee. Its so smooth, non bitter, lower caffeine and no lingering bad after taste. How you brew it and freshness are also a big factor in the final flavor. I am sorry to say that the coffee most served in the U.S. is of poor quality and very high in caffeine, thats why they mask it with addative flavors. Everyone that has ever tasted the coffee I brew have said its the best they ever had and got no jitters. I will go up against anyone (like those chili cook offs) and be voted best coffee. We should all have a get together with some home baked goods and I will supply the coffee. I fresh grind the beans as the water boils then french press and run it through a coffee filter to remove the silt, add only a little organic turbinado sugar. Ohhh.........heaven!! If you insist on cheap coffee add a pinch of salt to the grinds as you brew... no more bitter! I don't need to because of the quality. I'll take quality over quantity any day.

It's no big deal if you drink random stuff out of a can. It can be a taste sensation if you drink it after it's been freshly ground and it's a good bean.

Stephan's post is wonderful, but for those of us that can't cough up the money for Kona, see this:

www.peets.com One location in the STL area in University City. I just have them mail me my french roast every couple of weeks. Cream and sugar, I can't start my day without it.

Is there better coffee? I'm sure that there is. However there is a whole lotta bad out there too.

Best coffee that I ever had? A perfect cappucino in Siena, Italy.

I drink coffee in the morning mainly because I won't drink a soda that early. It tends to help me warm up some also. Seldom do I drink a cup in the afternoon or evening, unless it is extremely cold outside.
