Well, I thought the day would never come when the University would actually change the way they think and get rid of Chief Illiniwek.

I know posting this that I am about to get SLAMMED, but I'm just saying that it's about time. Not because I am ANTI-CHIEF or anything like that. It's just because the University took so long to make a decision. While the rest of the world stopped using people as mascots over the last ten years, the University of Illinois (while I love it dearly), drags it's feet, especially when the alumni are pushing big bucks for them to keep the chief.

This came down to two things - NCAA participation and money. Those were the choices.

Do we tick off the alumni and boot the chief, or run the risk of never hosting an NCAA event (that pays out the wazoo, if you know what I mean!)

Well, I hope those crazy kids in Champaign calm down and move forward. I know it's a huge tradition, a moving one at that. I've seen it live several times and it's very interesting, but if it offends the group it supposedly represents, shouldn't we rethink it?

Don't worry, I still "bleed blue" and "paint the hall orange" and I'LL NEVER STOP SINGING THE FIGHT SONG, so just BRING IT ON!

what about the washington redskins, alanta braves , clevland Indians and I know their are many more. No I am not full blooded Indian just part cherekee. I don't have a problem with them using a Indian name they were not using it in a bad way.

Dand gpa beat me to it. Just another bow down to political correctness. Seminoles next?

Seems like only colleges do it, pros keep the names. Only one I can think of is the Bullets... too violent says they.

Who did it offend. NO ONE. I hope those "crazy kids" from Champaign fight to get their Mascot back. It was not done in a bad light, and I also am part Indian and enjoyed it. This political correctness has to stop somewhere otherwise Smokey the Bear is in trouble. He will not be politically correct with smoke killing animals or something as ridiculous as that.

you know what's sick with this, it's that the only ones in Champaign who want the chief gone is that stupid professor at U of I who is a racist IMO. Yes I used some harsh words there, but what you are doing in taking away the chief is taking away indian history from being shown to the masses every time that the chief performed, and furthermore if your taking away the chief, then why is the NCAA not taking away Florida State, or what about the many high schools that have indians as their team name, or what about the Atlanta Braves?

actaully bob-o, NCAA won't go against FSU because they accordingly aren't hostile... has anyone seen their mascot, they have an ARCHER at halftime for petes sake. all chief illinwick did was dance around in an indian dance. he did more to educate than harm!
