As a recently returned soldier from the war in Iraq. I am constantly confronted when I turn on the news each day and hear that more of us soldiers have died in Iraq. What really bothers me about mainstream news and media is the way they report these deaths. Typically it is a very short segment simply stating the body count of the US soldiers dead, and if it was a local soldier that was killed, then they simply move right into weather or whatever else that seems to be more important.

I am more concerned that nobody in this civilan world really cares........I am surrounded by people who are self absorbed, and shoot off about what should be done about the war in Iraq. But when it comes right down to it most simply look the other way as we soldiers lay down our lives.

Am I bitter......yes

I am truly starting to see the issues my father returned from during the vietman war. It is enough to send most over the edge.....Especially when you are dealing with PTSD, and the loss of men you knew......husbands, fathers, someones son. Yet it seems everyone just looks away

It's sad to hear about the soldiers dying, but I have gotten tired of hearing about the war. Every time the news starts to mention it, I change the channel. I do pray for those that are doing their job to keep us free. I hope they find Osama so the war can end.

Mr. Sandman,

I'm just a stay-at-home mom, so I really don't know everything about the war in Iraq. What I do know is that I AM SICK of people who can sit here in their nice air-conditioned homes on their padded chairs in front of their computers and type complaint after complaint about how the war is being handled and even how our men fighting are just killing innocent people. You and the rest of our troops have more courage than all of these CRYBABIES piled together could ever dream of having.

I just want you and any others who have fought wars bravely for this country and our freedom to know that (even though I'm just one) I really appreciate what sacrifice you all have made. This world is going to Hell in a handbasket and we all know it, but I thank God that there are those as yourself who would stand up and fight for what is right.

I feel that war is right and absolutely necessary to secure this nation and the morals that some of us still hold true to. If the tree huggers and peacemongers really got what they wanted (a Socialist or Communist country) they'd be complaining a whole lot more than they do already.

Thank you for sacrificing your lives to keep us free! God willing, and thanks to men like you, my children will grow up in this world seeing that true chivalry exists and that there are brave men who will do whatever it takes to secure our freedom. Maybe they will be inspired to do the same! God bless you all!

I also want to thank you for your service. I agree with the war in Iraq and feel that it is necessary in securing our future freedom.

It's a shame that most media is so liberal-minded. I think that there are actually more people that support the war than what the media portrays.

I know I'll never be able to understand what our men and women have to deal with in war, but I do pray every day for you. With all my heart I thank you all for your courage, dedication and sacrifices so we may all enjoy the freedoms and rights we have. THANK YOU!

Mr. Sandman, can you tell us what you would like the media to do? Or, what would you like the citizens of the US to do?

If you feel that something is being done wrong, step up and respond to people so it can be changed.

Of course, talking to those such as mechany wouldn't hurt either.

Well, regardless of any of our personal feelings toward the war itself, all we can do is stand behind you my friendand try to support you.
I would never pretend to understand what happened to you or what is happening now to so many others over there. But don't let the length of a news piece color you perception of our caring and thankfulness to you and all the other men and women put in harms way for our freedom.
My brother was part of Vietnam and my father served in Korea and have heard amny stories from both of them and would never wish even the least of them on anyone Sandman.
All I can offer is my prayers and my hope for a better future where military action is a thing of the past. I know that day will never come. There will always be conflicts of nations on this earth but I can still hope.

When my husband was in Vietnam. It was awful. We didn't get up to date coverage of the news like we do now.It was weeks old.I hated to even open any letter from the goverment.Even tho I knew that they usually came to your door if anything happened.I never watch the news then,I also changed channels.I was so afraid of seeing my husband wounded or dead. But on behalf of the news people. If they cover the news over there they are wrong and if they don't cover it they are wrong. So it is a lose lose situation for the media.Technology is greater now.Up to the minute.Sometimes my husband will comment on how things are different now then when he was in.One of his comments the other day was .We never got welcome homes like that when we came home.I am so glad to see they sre getting noticed for their service. So it is a tough one.But we do care.We really do.

Hey Sandman,

I was at the VA the other day and met an SFC who had been to Vietnam and had just returned from Iraq. He told me he felt the war in Iraq was worse for him than being in Vietnam. I met him near the PTSD clinic. I listened to him as I listened to Vietnam Vets when I was younger before I even considered being a soldier myself.

You are a combat veteran and I am not. But I will say that people care they just don't know what to do. Supportive troop efforts like fundraising and morale boosters are on the decline so lets try to encourage more of that in a tangible form. When I was in service I used to donate alittle every month to the Army Emergency Relief fund for needy soldiers with families. Whats that address Sandman? What's the number to your units family representative? Put those numbers out there that can help not just yourself but many troops see that the public still supports them.

Hi Sandman -- First and Foremost - THANK YOU! I cannot tell you the respect that I have for our military troops and the lengths they have to go through to protect us. I wanted to say that I DO think of all our soldiers in Iraq and the effect they experience when they return home. I pray daily that no more lives will be lost and think constantly of the families and loved ones affected by the war.

I have a son-in-law who recently returned from Iraq a changed man. I prayer for him, my daughter and two beautiful grandkids that he had to suddenly leave home to fight for his country.

PLEASE, PLEASE Don't think ALL people don't care, I care deeply and will continue to prayer for all of you. God Bless you and thanks again for protecting me and my family.

I understand how you feel, Sandman. Another thing that bothers me is that we very rarely ever see anything on the news about the good things that are happening in Iraq because of our military. The media seems to report only the negative, which I think is not right. Personally, I want to thank you for your service. You are more appreciated by me and my family than you could know.

I was in for 12 years (disable vet now) but never saw action. I can't start to understand PTSD but I want you to know. Once Military always Military, talk to other exmilitary members. It was hard coming back the the civilian world for me so it must harder for you guys. Contact your nearest VA support group. There's a clinic in St, Charles also. Stay the course and keep your head held high.

Sandman I can not thank you enough. I know you have put your life on the line for our freedom and you have to listen to the crap on the news about the protesters (Jane Fonda's) and the politicians who say they are for you but then pull the money so you can not get the equipment you need to fight this war well there are a lot more of us that honor you for what you have done for this Country but we do not make the news.
I will say one more thing - if you are spit on like the Vietnam Vets were - let us know and we will show them what it is like to be spit on - I'll bring the chewing tobacco.

Dont you dare go over that edge. i joined the army in 2000, unfortuanatley, i also have reactive airway, and those pines in georgia got me good, i got put on an inhaler, and voila!, medical discharge:(. this haunts me every day of my life. i have friends and family serving over seas, in the war and in peaceful areas. know this my friend: myself and several of my friends will physically fight for your honor, WE will never ever ever forget or downplay what u and your fellow soldiers have done for us now, or ever!!!! i am almost in tears for this letter, and im a 25 year old guy, thats kinda hard to do to me. i will always have your back, and any other vet out theres' as well! i dont know if anyone has ever seen my propaganda mobile out there, but it is covered in repubilcan/america bumperstickers, kind of like a hippys', its my patriotic duty to have the same obnoxious propaganda as the libs, the reason i bring this up is because i have been seeing this trend getting bigger for us repubs, and i personally think that things WILL get better, all my respect, prayers, and yes love, to you and yours, and every other vet and soldier out there!!!!!! I WILL NEVER GIVE UP THIS FIGHT

A 27 year old who recenlty returned from the war in Iraq. I served with the 101st Airborne division "Air Assault". I created this blog to raise public awareness of PTSD, "Post Traumatic Stress Disorder", and the effect it has on us soldiers when we return from war and are let loose back into the civilian world.
