So the CEOs of the big three are back in DC asking for bailout money in order to stay in business.  It seems that Ford's CEO is going to work for $1 a year and there will be cuts on executive salaries and bonuses and lush travel expenses etc.  All sounds pretty good but I wonder.....What about the unions....Will they give anything back?  Certainly these people want to keep their jobs so maybe they need to contribute toward saving the companies.   It's fine for them to put up signs on their union offices about buying American cars, but if they want to stay in business, the workers need to take some cuts too.

They have a great contract and get super benefits including full pay even after a layoff.  And why do you thing the cars are so overpriced?

The Unions have gave back and gave back.... we gave up a ton of the work to part time workers that start at half what a seniority line worker makes........ They have given in to two tier wages.......Huge concessions in health care......... No they are not the problem here..... And I don't know where you get the Idea that they draw full pay after layoff.... It' more like 60 percent and most workers don't have enough time to draw it much over 10 months........
I agree that changes need to be made but even if they made them cars for a dollar they are not going to pass the savings to anybody....
Most Foriegn cars are as pricey as the American and I wouldn't even consider driving the Tin cans that are.....

Remember that KIA could stand for Killed In Accident........

i remeber years ago you could walk into a new car dealership and pick from a compact car a mid size car or a full size car but somehow the auto industry got away from that.

Seems as though there are quite a few UAW workers in disagreement with you at this point. We've talked with and hunted with quite a few here lately that just wish they could go back to work even if it's for a lesser amount. They are drawing 80% of their pay as of now but, as you mentioned, it will run out. Most I know are looking for other tyoes of work or working for cash. I personally know quite a few union construction workers working for about $15 an hour or less because they don't get the sub pay the UAW receives. Just as the prices of a lot of things go down in hard times, most people reallize they need to take less pay also.......

Well, unions might have hurt things a little bit but overall it's the SUITS' fault. They get these huge salaries ($46M after only 18mos on job) plus a bonus of half that.

If just 250 executive positions were abolished at each of the Big 3 then they'd be in the black within 3 months.

the big 3 They want the money and to keep on doing buisness as usual.
If you ask me they can fix their own mess by
1. lowering the cost of their product
2. lowering their own CEO and executive wages
3. drastically reduce the wages of the assembly line workers... these workers get paid up to 130.00 dollars an hour to a figure like 130. dollars a day to do assembly line work which took no formal education to get them their job... they got the jobs because they knew someone who had their foot in the door already...it always has been very hard to get on on these jobs unless you know/knew someone. Get real to be paid outrageous pay to do assembly line work for the auto industry is crazy when there are many other industry assembly workers accross the nation who get paid adecent wage between 10 , 15 and even 20 dollars an hour. like so many other manufacturing jobs not to forget the assembly workers at your local fast food restraunt who work all day assembling the food that we put into or bodies!
if the auto industry would take my advice they would pull themselves out of their self made mess by selling more vehicles by sheer volume.

I liked Mr. Wild meaning of KIA and that is so true.

People are fooled by Korean built cars and the Kia is a huge example.

Big 3 problems are overpaid and too many executives.

Yes, sales need to increase but salaries need knocked in half. Cut the top execs of each company.

Then, work on the unions to reduce all their demands and build a little better auto and Big 3 will be fine.

No bailout money needed, just free advice.

just look at what most of us drive...its almost something foreign...if not then the families buying foreign cars have two or three in their driveway...we bought our camry because of dependability and resale value...big three just needs to make a better product at a decent price...i dont know anything about executives...
