Quite frankly it bothers me when people compare this to 93...

witch in some places it may be...

But for my county it has not been flooded at all and we checked the levees and there is alittle seepage under but nothing, NOTHING compared to 93.

As some people may of heard the story, We actually Re located on of our smaller towns, see it all got washed away beyond compare, and we moved it on a near by bluff, about a mile away, this little village founded in 1909 Valmeyer, my proud home town. At that time we had 900 citizens, now we have actually grown to 1,200, we have a great volunteer fire and police departments. and many organizations 3 churches a UCC, Baptist, and Catholic. Our story was on an ABC speacial, and our whole town turned on.

Have you heard the story? or did u live here? Tell me your story

And thats y it bothers me when people compare it

I would have to go up in the air to say for sure..... In 93 I flew out to bury my Grampa and it looked like an ocean...... 93 was mre wide spread with many more rivers involved..... This one is confined to the Mississippi and is all coming from the north......

But a Flood is a Flood.........

I feel for any Victim.....

The flood of 1993 is the actual blueprint of severity for most floods now in this area. Yes, your "new" town won't flood this time because the river at/near your old town's location isn't as high as in 1993 and plus you're on the hill now.

Actually, the crest levels in this metro area will fall well below the 1993 numbers but in certain areas, they are now blueprinted as the flood of 2008.

As Tommy said, "a flood is a flood". What I find truly amazing is in 1993 and currently, my lawn (not near rivers at all) is so dry and I actually need rain. It's all a matter of locale.

we have a whole town that relocated too, right outside hermann 4 miles, rhineland mo, they drew lots to see where their houses would go and they were moved up onto the hill...we arent like we were in 93 either, but im sure some people are...God help them..

The answer to flooding up and down the the rivers seems to be stronger higher levees. This kind of thinking isn't working.I wonder what would happen if ALL levees were lowered by 1/2. A rather radical thought, but, maybe a direction we should think about.

I agree with kdubken. I talked with a National Guard member here in Winfield and he said that if they hadnt built up the Monarch levy in Chesterfield we wouldnt be having the problems we have now here in Lincoln County. The levee they built "squeezed" the river into trickling through a smaller area thereby "backing the river up" upstream. But we have to protect the "money areas" dont we? Those people are rich with millions of $$$ invested in real estate with strip malls and BMW dealerships and we're just a rural farm community. Cant fight mother nature and cant fight big money.

I am originally from a township right near Granite City ILL. It is called chotue island. I use to spend all my summers on the island and had many friends whom lived there. In 93 this entire island was washed away.People lost everything. Homes farmland, livestock everything. It was devistaing to see this and heart wrenching to seee my friends wshed out of the lives they had. So to compare this year to 93? NO WAY!!!!
