My mom was friends with some fire/ems folks in High Ridge, MO and I was friends with a girl in high school that was a volunteer fire/ems in Cedar Hill, MO. I think she works in the ER at Children's hospital now. She used to do so many jobs like that. She also worked at Six Flags as an ems and at Hidden Valley Ski Resort on ski patrol. I really appreciate what you guys do! You definitely DO NOT get the credit you deserve (or the pay!)

I was the first person at an accident once. I was on my way home from one of my night classes in college and I turned onto one of the back roads near my home. I couldn't tell what in the world I was seeing up ahead at first. When I got close enough I saw it was a truck that had flipped over almost on its top. There was a guy that had been thrown from the truck laying there curled up in a ball screaming about his back and asking if his friend was ok. I couldn't see his friend. I told him not to move (I didn't know if he had any neck injuries), covered him up with my coat (it was in december and VERY cold) and called 911 of course. It was a work truck - there were saws, ladders, etc all over the road. The front of the truck had hit a rock embankment so I couldn't get to the cab of the truck to see about his friend. The police showed up first and I told him that the guy laying on the ground kept talking about his friend. The cop shined his flashlight into the cab of the truck. Sure enough, there was a guy in the drivers seat with his neck at a VERY bad angle. It was obvious he was not alive. It was confirmed later (through the

It was confirmed later (through the friend of my mom's that works at the fire dept in High Ridge) that the driver was pronounced dead on the scene. Both guys had been drinking. When I left there I had to go a different way home because it was going to take them awhile to clear the road with all that debris on it. I started out on my second route home only to come upon ANOTHER accident, but fire and ems were already on the scene (thank God!) So I had to turn around AGAIN and go the really long way home. Needless to say I was slightly freaked out.

I've been in one accident of my own. I was the passenger. I bit through my tongue and chipped my tooth. I didn't even KNOW I was bleeding profusely from the mouth until the ems workers got there and hauled me off to the ambulance. My friend, the driver, was all crabby that I got taken to the ambulance first. She was flipping out. (she also flipped out when I kicked the door on her car open to get out after the accident. Yeah, we're not friends anymore. She was a little crazy) I guess they figured she was okay and probably thought I was in shock or something. I was just trying to keep her calm. Someone had to have a level head.

A lot of people in my family are Firemen and I have the greatest admiration for Fire and EMS services. It is a tough job physically and emotionally. You guys are the best!!!

thanks very much for the kind words!! We do what we do because we love it! It is a very tough thing some times to have to deal with, but we have our ways of taking int all in and letting it all out! I only ask that if you see an emergency vehicle on the road with its lights and sirens on move to the right side of the road and allow them safe passage! Also please drive slowly and cautiously through accident scenes! Those two things help us to do our job and in a safer manner for all!!!

I was in it for about 10+ years (over 3 years with Gateway [1979-1983] Northwest in Overland [1983-1984] and St. Louis City [1984-1989]). It is stressful (especially with St. Louis City) but rewarding when I learned so much about helping others. I sorta do first responder at my church (St. Alphonsus "Rock" on North Grand Ave). I guess I can't get it out of my blood!!
