Are you struggling to get your toddler to the potty? Are you at your wits end with all the potty talk? Tuesday morning in our 7am hour, we're going to find out easy ways to get your little ones to the bathroom and out of those costly diapers. Yippie! I have two in them now and am ready to take out a second mortgage on my house. Yes, it is time for my son to just say no to diapers. Any questions you may have for the good doctor, please let me know here and I'll ask them on the air Tuesday morning. Any parental advice you may have for me, I'll take that too.

You have to make it fun for them. Get a good potty chair that has a book rack and a toilet paper roll hanger on it. and remind them several times a day and give them some sort of reward for using potty what ever works for your child what works for one might not work for the next one. hope this helps
Don't get upset with them they wil start when they are ready. Don't push to hard as this might set them back.

I have two in diapers. My soon to be 3 yr old (Jan. 27) will only go on the potty as long as his diaper stays off,And runs around bare bottom.(For awhile) I've tried putting his big boy underwear on but he screams and wants nothing to do w/ them. He does good for a while and then wants his diaper back on. When he has his diaper back on he will not tell me he has to go potty and goes in his diaper...BUT he doesn't always tell me everytime w/ diaper off either. If I keep his diaper off for to long he will poo in the floor.(So I will put the diaper on for him to go #2) And then some days he wants nothing to do w/ potty training at all. But he will NOT go #2 on the potty at all. Any suggestions!

My son wasn't potty trained until he was 4 -- so I can definitely identify with this issue. We tried everything, but the only thing that worked was "time."

No one has mentioned the cost of disposable diapers yet. When my son finally became potty-trained, and we didn't have to buy diapers anymore, it was like getting a pay raise!!

Nightime training is on my mind. I have a 4 year old that is daytime trained, but I still have to put goodnights on her when she goes to bed. Everytime I tell her that she needs to start learning how to get up in the middle of the night to go potty so she can wear her big girl panties all the time she tells me "I don't think that is a good idea". LOL

I guess my question would be is there an age that you start really working on night time training or is there is a certain way that you should try to train? Or is it just like everything else...It takes time and is on their schedule.

My son potty trained at 2 years old. I am a modern mom, so I invested in Pull Ups. Big Mistake. He came up to me one day and said "I can't potty in my big boys but I can in the pull ups". I took the Pull Ups away right then. I Put him in underwear and sweatpants (for absorbency just incase, to protect the floor). When he had an accident, he felt it and it was uncomfortable. He recognized things much faster. He quicky figured out the potty. It takes a lot of patience and I also used a sticker chart. When he got a certain amount of stickers, we went for a happy meal.

I had my daughter potty trained before she was 2 years old. when she was about 1 she got a potty chair every time I went potty here she was. without take anything off her she would sit & watch me go. as time of doing this passed she started to take her own stuff off to sit on the potty. as this went on she lost the need to have anything to do with the potty's anymore & I just let it go for awhile. Then one day I ran to the store came home with stickers to gt her started again. it worked for awhile. I had to change what I was doing a few other times but I always tried to give her time I mean she was a bit young. took the diapers away & got her pull ups. I told her they was paper panties. it worked she did not like baby paper panties on. & the next thing I knew she had went a week with no wet pants at all. so I got her Big Girl Panties out. Then soon after we changed her bedroom from the toddler bed to the big girl roon with a new twin bed & from Dora to Disney Princess's She never had trouble with bed weeting either :-)

I think each child will be ready when they are tired of their diapers being wet and spoiled. Don't rush them, they will give you signs when they are ready.

I heard a couple years ago that Dr. Phil has a way of potty training a kid in a day, if you are willing to invest in one whole day. I don't know for sure if it was Dr. Phil's plan or someone he had on his show. It sounded fantastic, and I could see that it really would work with a lot of kids, if you wait until they are mature enough physically to hold urine for awhile.

Got to go potty. See ya!

Margie: I recommend the video and book...Once Upon a Potty (there is a boy version and a girl version). I think it is available at Toys R Us or maybe Once Upon a Child...It worked for my boys!!

I have a 3 yr old and its not that he doesnt want to go on the potty he is scared to death of the potty. He thinks something in it is gonna get him. I have no clue how to ease his fear so he can feel more comfortable. All my other kids were so easy to train why is it so hard now?

Just saw part of the story on potty training this morning. I have a two year old boy who will be three in March. He does excellent at urinating in the potty. He is doing fair at sleeping without a diaper during naps and sometimes at night. We have only had a few accidents within a 3 month period. The only situation we are having difficulty with is having bowel movements. He freaks out when he needs to have one. He will ask for a diaper. I have tried to put him on the pot several times for a bowel movement, but he goes into hysterics as if he is afraid to have a bowel movement on the pot. I do not want to set us back by forcing him to sit there. I have also heard that it is not healthy and could cause constipation. I was just curioous if anyone had any ideas on what I should do..or what would make him fear having a bowel movement on the potty?

I tried and tried with my son, but never really pushed... then one day he wanted to wear the big boy underware and that was it. It took him a weekend to get the hang of things. As far as at night, he only has had maybe 3 accidents 4 at the most since May. He was 2 1/2 when he just wanted to. (turned 3 in sept.) Some of it I think the kid just needs to be ready. if their not ready then it's not going to work

I'm working on the potty too. My son will be 3 in June. The doctor told me not to be surprised if he didn't go until then. Although, he seems to only want to go "pee pee" in the potty. I have to convince him to go for a "number 2." He gets all freaked out and doesn't want to go for that. So, I don't force him. I'm going to try the target thing too. He also likes to flush and stand on the little stool to wash his hands. But then he wants me to go potty. Is that too much information? I don't know. I also send him with his dad. It makes him feel like a big boy! Either way, I'm trying to get him started. When he walks up to me and says "mommy, I need my diaper changed," it's time to go :-)

I have a 19 month old niece that will be getting potty-trained in the next 6-8 months. She has 2 older playmates (3 year old twins) at her babysitter house that are in the process of getting potty-trained.

While my older sister hasn't gotten anything for potty training yet, my niece always squats whenever she does her business in her diaper.

I wish you all of the luck in the world. Just make sure that they are ready. They should be able to indicate that they need to go and be able to handle the physical part of pulling pants up and down. Once on a Potty is great, Cheerios or Fruit Loops also work well you just have to try until you see what works. Pretty panties worked for my daughter, Fruit Loops for my one twin son and the other twin trained about 4 months later when he got tired of diapers. Once Upon a Potty helped introduce the concept for all of them. Also I would grab them when they showed signs of needing to go and set them on the potty chair so that we could have quick success.

My son is 21 months old and is occasionally showing signs he is maybe getting ready for the potty. He watches my husband potty (not number two, as I would NEVER subject anyone to THAT stink), but I guess I should get him his own chair. Anyone know when to start all that?

Margie, if you want less expensive diapers, shop Costco. They have super cheap wipes that are actually of a pretty decent quality too.

I anchor Fox 2 News in the Morning and yes, I actually do enjoy mornings! I've always gotten up early and find getting off to a great start in the morning is refreshing. After Fox 2, my life quickly turns to my family. My 4 year old son, 2 year old daughter, & newborn baby boy keep me busy running everywhere! I know all you Mom's out there can appreciate that. I have to say, being a Mommy is the greatest job on earth! Did I mention I have the best husband in the world? I'm truly amazed at all he does everyday! Other than family life, my heart is with kids born with the odds against them. I spend a lot of time with charities focusing on children. Thank you for allowing me to "wake-up" with you every morning and I look forward to hearing from you on the blogs. God Bless.
