As I get older, stories affect me more and more.  The fox files I am airing Wednesday night is one of those.  I sat down with several families who are members of MoCOPS. That stands for the Missouri chapter of Concers of Police Survivors.  Simply put... these are the families of fallen police officers in the St. Louis area.  They opened their hearts about the issues their families face long after their officers story is out of the headlines.  COPS is a national organization based at Lake of the Ozarks.  Backstoppers helps these families heal financially.  COPS heals their mind and heart.  These families offer year round support to each other.  Only they know what it like to see their loved ones death played out over and over in the media.  Only they know what it's like to wait sometimes years for the officer's killer to go to trial.  These families step in anytime an officer is killed.  They are in Clayton now supporting the McEntee family as their case goes before a jury again.

MoCOPS - Thanks for what you do. Words cannot express my gratitude for your actions.

Peer support is useful in all areas and is often much more important than a therapist could ever be. I recently made a shirt for one of our facilitators that said, "Trust one who has experienced it". Small words, with big impact.

Another one down in Florida this morning. So many bad cops out there and there's no way to know which ones are good and which one's deserved their fate.

MoCOPS THANK YOU FOR YOUR FAMILIES. Especially the fallen heros, I think as a nation we should have honor those people with their special day, like Veterans Day, BUT SPECIFICALLY FOR fire and police, and people put your money where your mouth is. I do!

I haven't seen any behavior of a cop that deserved to be killed...fired? yes, prosecuted and jailed? yes, dead? no.

I think this support group is a great thing and what the Backstoppers do for the families.

That was really poor taste in a blog about supporting the families of fallen officers.

I hear the Westboro Baptist Church is looking for new members, you might want to join up and crash a few funerals

I have been to some "backstopper" fundraisers. I have a fallen City Police officer in my group. However, what about the victims of crime out there that have no charities set up for them? Police officers are not the only people in harms way at this day and age.

It upsets me when I see innocent victims of crime take a hit and no one is there to help their families. Backstoppers should also contribute to these victims and not just "earmark" their money to the law enforcement families. JMO

I responded this way because, I know an innocent person that was killed on the highway. It took two years to finally get the jerk and sentence him. This family received NOTHING from anyone.

I don't think that people should get special treatment because of their career. In my eyes, each life if precious. There are families out there that are victims of crime and suffer high consequences. These victims live on and simply have to deal with their loss on their own. May God Bless Them!!

OOPS: each life "is" precious.

Darn, I wish we could edit our responses.

Mancillas - Sorry, but I have to disagree with your suggestion.

First, let's start with one of your statements, "each life is precious." I couldn't agree more.
Also, I would agree that two years from arrest to trial is entirely too long.

That said, this is where I disagree.....the Charter for establishing the Backstoppers and their mission is to provide funding to the families of police and fire personnel who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Based on that mission statement, the Backstopper organization goes about collecting
donations to support that objective. To expand the individuals covered by adding the butcher, the baker, and the candlestick maker to the list of families supported in the event of loss dilutes the focus of their organization, and would ultimately detract from their abilities to raise funds for the first responders families. In addition, by expanding the list further reduces the funding they are able to provide these families (slicing the pie into more slices).

Practically every time I've seen the local news where someone who has performed a heroic action who is not a first responder has been killed, I've seen a corresponding trust fund for the victim's family has been established at some bank, and instructions are given on how to contribute. You and anyone else
are then free to get out your checkbook if you are so moved.
