I was listening to the national news this morning and my interest was peaked when I heard reporters tease a story that took place in my university’s hometown of St. Charles.  A couple of minutes later I learned that this particular story dealt with Main Street, which is where many of my friends spend their evenings (or very early mornings depending on who we’re talking about) and it’s only about a mile away from campus.

It seems that a councilman is attempting to ban all cussing, drinking games, table dancing – anything remotely obscene – even songs and literature.  Supposedly Main Street is becoming out of control and this will help prevent rowdiness and underage drinking.

Is this yet another case that will play the “violation of rights” card.  Owners feel they should have a say in what goes on in their bar.  Also, guidelines will be tough to set.  Who’s to judge what song, etc. is appropriate or not.  Which words are profane?  Amendments to the bill will be discussed at a meeting to be held January 14 at St. Charles City Hall.

Are these restrictions necessary or are they taking this too far?

It is just another issue where the government wants to control us. If this is allowed to pass eventually we won't be able to do anything without out the governments permission. Yes they are going to far. jmo

like the old saying" the man that has all the gold makes the rules". in this case the city can approve or reject business permits every year so they may have to go along with what the city wants to do.

south beach in miami was ok in the past but in the last few years things have gotten out of control there. i know some people that live in miami that will not go there anymore and other areas in miami have sprouted up for entertainment so they go there.

Well, I do believe in civil rights, but to allow fights and rowdy behavior? I think that would be plain stupid. A bar should never allow rowdy behavior in his establishment. Like me, I am a guy who is against violence. If it pases, it shouldn't be signed without voter approval. It's the voters that are paying the taxes for it. I think that it might be time for Elliot Davis to investigate it and put it onto the next "You Paid for It" segment.

In Illinois, the Fantasy Land strip club allowed fights to break out and they got in trouble for it and now it's facing being scrapped!

I just went to that site that the biker dude mentioned and there's a lot of input there with a variety of new things.

It's getting to the point that people who own businesses can't make their own rules any more. If fights break out in these places, then it's the owner's responsibility to take care of it. I doubt seriously they'd want their places messed up and certainly they would not want other patrons to stay away because of the fighting and lewd behavior. But if they are dumb enough to let that stuff go on and not have the police called on them, then they can live with the consequences. I just wish the government would butt out -- you can't make laws up for everything -- and who says what is a "curse" word? If you have some really holy person, they might think "hell" is a really bad word when someone else wouldn't even blink if he heard it. This is going way too far.

NO cussing in bars...WTF? So let's see one cannot smoke in bars in Illinois and now in St. Charles they are trying to make it illegal to play drinking games in bars? Have they outlawed drinking in bars yet? What about all those singles looking to get picked up in a bar - is flirting still legal?

The only thing I can say and this person might be a nice guy(?) - that councilman from St. Charles needs a tremendous makeover!

ROCK YOUR VOTE!

Yeah, I can't wait till they outlaw liquor in bars too!

I'm kinda torn on this subject. (having ran a bar, having been a dj in a strip club) We didn't let attitudes in our place. We didn't even allow arm wrestling, any show of macho-ism was nipped in the bud! (it only leads to fights, which benefit no one)

When they opened the strip club here in town, there was a strong movement against it! I only part time dj'd a few weeks before they closed. They put so many rules on the girls, they couldn't make a move without being in violation! But yet, the bar across town has NIGHTLY rude and crude behavior going on! (without persecution)

I don't get the double standard?

Yeah, there should be limits to you can do in a bar, any business for that matter.

But, it is a BAR! I don't smoke but I do expect there to be smoke in a bar! I put myself in that position, I can take myself out of it. I'm not going to ask the business owner to change their rules to accommodate me.

I worked in the 2nd rowdiest bar in St. Charles county in the 70-80's, The only thing you couldn't do was arm-wrestle. Because that always starts a fight.
This was not a bar and grill which most of St. Charles Main Street bars are. If its a restaurant maybe you shouldn't dance on the tables, but it should be optional. Kids just like to have fun.

Just one more note to show my true age, when i was 18 the Festival of the Little Hills was the 2nd best street festival in the country, only the Big Easy had St. Charles beat.
That all went south when they started beer gardens and all the restrictions. But I guess the next morning always found too many dead flowers, dead soldiers and questionable substance on the streets. That was 1968

What’s wrong with the current laws we have? Oh, wait, the current drunk and disorderly law holds the individual responsible for their behavior, requires you to be drunk and disorderly, and is enforced by the police on the individual. This law would make the owners responsible and therefore they would have to enforce it or be fined. Fines can be big cause it’s a business and it eliminates some confrontation with the public by the police. What else did that govy guy say – they want to take the decision away from the prosecutor so that the charge is absolute and thinking about whether it’s truly worth it wont be necessary. Wow, anything that takes away thought has got to be good, right? Should we rename St. Charles? Call it Saints Only or maybe Ghost-town Charles?

I am a senior at Lindenwood anticipating my introduction into the "real world" this May. After switching majors every semester I have created my own via a contract degree. It's called Written and Visual Communications which is basically a fancy way of saying journalism with a little bit of art thrown in the mix. I recently finished an internship with Sauce Magazine which was awesome! Some of my passions include writing, beach lounging, working on my fitness and baking. I just got a snowboard for Christmas so if anyone has tips for an amateur, bring 'em on.
