Abner Doubleday: Baseball Legacy?

Abner Doubleday; Was a Federal Army Captain at Fort Sumpter on 12 April 1861 when the Confederates attacked. Did he or did he not play the first baseball game in Cooperstown, NY circa 1839? ... I have heard lore on both sides...now all you trivia people can weigh in.....
