There are actually lobbyists who actively lobby against things like simplifying the tax codes (as a flat tax would do). They're paid for by the big tax preparation folks. Just think what might happen to companies like H & R Block if we did such a thing.

Actually, I'd prefer a national sales tax. That way you get to tax all the undeclared income as well.

Yes Jimmy CPA's and H&R Block-heads would hate it.It seems like most people would like it.National sales tax also interesting. Was that the one Huckabee was for?

I agree, our tax code is ludicrous. Too many people make a boat load of money off our tax system. CPA's and tax preparing companies to name a few. This is the only thing stopping us from going to a flat tax or a National sales tax. Either would be better than the current system.

I think this is what Huckabee was proposing.

Sales or value added tax would be a burden on those who are on SS or disability. They've paid their share of taxes. Changing the rules now would run the prices of everything up to basically be taxing ss at the same rate as regular income. Aside from this I would be in favor of the change with a provision to exclude senior/disabled necessary expenses. If they are in position to buy diamonds and Mercedes Benz', I say tax it.

I suppose you could make simple adjustments for the elderly and disabled.Under certain planes they would not get taxed at all,not counting sales tax on ltd items.

I believe that exceptions could be made for those on fixed incomes. A National sales tax, would ensure that all paid taxes. This would eliminate those that escape taxes though illegal endeavors. I bet that tax revenues would increase substantially.

Actually there are several problems with a National Sales tax. How do you handle the transition between what we have now and the sales tax? You have to abolish the amendment which provides the government with the ability to collect INCOME taxes. If you don't do that you're going to end up with both and a far larger chunk of your income going to feed the beast.

Second, in transition. Assume you are financially responsible and have amassed considerable savings. You've paid income taxes on those savings, and now they want to tax it again when you spend it.

Frankly, I'd rather see a flat tax with no exceptions. You still have the IRS to enforce complaince (although you can call it something else) but you don't risk not killing the income tax amendment.

I,m with Chickenkiller . Flat Tax is the only fair plan .
A flat tax would allow cutting the IRS staff . by at least 1/2 .
Nxet , we could stop wasting money on . Useless Goverment programs like , The Department Education . Let each States handle their own education programs .
Make all Senators and Congressmen invest in Social Security . ( stop the sweet heart retirement deal ) they have now .
I could go on forever . Term Limits , Court System , Health Insurance , Stupid Lawsuits , Borders , foreign aid . drilling for oil here , clean enviroment , ECT , ECT .
I think its only a dream , LOL

lets have massive layoffs on government jobs, divisions and sectors. Most of them are useless lumps that suck up tax dollars anyway. Maybe then there will be some left for what it was intended.

I realize that there would be problems with a national sales tax (and, yes, that's what Huckabee was proposing). But, it's really the only way to tax all that undeclared income, such as from illegal deals or creative expensing. A flat tax would also be a vast improvement over what we have now.

I think it would be nice to stare at one form every April.Eliminate double taxation of capitol gains then income tax.Tax income only and encourage savings and investment.

Flat tax!!!! I agree. That would make all the drug dealers pay tax and all the people who work for cash pay taxes.

They could give the people of social security a card for a discount on their taxes.

Except: All the CPA's will need to go back to school and change professions.

Sik, No one in this thread said that CPA's and the like were bad for making money doing taxes. What was said was that they were some of the major players in keeping the status quo. There's a big difference.

Also, what other capitalist country doesn't spend money on their military?

What are the French and Germans getting for their tax dollars that is so valuable? What would those people be getting if it weren't for us (the United States) spending money on the military, 'useless' wars, and re-building their countries after said wars?

It seems to me The "Rich Pigs' are the ones who can afford Tax Attorneys etc. So don't you think they are more sheltered under the current system?I agree that
France gets more for its taxes, because they are smart enough to have Nuclear Power and sell the surplus energy to England.

I'm all for a flat tax. We need to eliminate all loop holes and deductions to further simplify everything.
I don't think a national sales tax, like Huckabee proposed, would work so well. If you tax every day goods at 20%+, then add local and state taxes, it would drive costs through the roof. That would create a huge market niche for organized crime to sell everyday items on the black market. I'm not real keen on the idea of buying a gallon of milk from Bugsy and Knuckles. :)
