To me the most important things in this country are:

Freedom, Education, Sports and Entertainment

Why is it then that the most important people, the folks in the military and Civil Servants, firefighters and the police, get paid the least, next to them are the Teachers of our children.  While folks who entertain us or play a professional sport make the most, a multi-billion dollar industry.

When was the last time a Baseball or Football player died during a game, doing their job. I know there job is not easy, long hours of training and games but it is not considered dangerous. I believe more people die slipping in a bath tub than during a game.

On the other hand we have soldiers dying everyday. We have police officers and fire fighters dying almost every day. These folks who put their life on the line should make the most because they have the most to lose. I know that some of these folks make lots of money but that is the exception rather than the rule.

The people of America need to take back this country and get it back on the right path. Honor the people who need to be honored and compensate them accordingly. The salary should be equated to the risk of death on the job or the difference that they make on society and our future, our children. In my humble opinion professional athletes and entertainers loose out on both counts.

Thank you and may God bless.

Yep, Lots to digest. Maybe part of the problem is related to the new law FOX2 is blogging about. That blog is about adding additional laws and restrictions for teenagers. Oh my, that is more important. I say the more they screw around with the issues the more screwed we get. Very hard to change things in the RIGHT direction. I will retire soon and will get as far away from so many people. Will watch from the sidelines and live the best I can.

Does that mean urban teachers should be paid more because they work in a “potentially” hazardous or life threatening situations?

Larry actually some football players have died on the field. It may not be during a game but during practice. But if my memory serves me correctly I thought a basketball player did die after collapsing during a game. However, I do understand the point you are making.

We want to be safe but we don’t respect those who maintain order in our society. We question their aurthority when we have been caught breaking the law. Actually I thought the courts were the place to determine guilt and innocence.

When a fire broke out in a community people would jump in and try to put the fire out. Something called a bucket bagrade. Today people stand around shouting burn burn burn and get in the way of the people who are trying to put out the fire.

Teachers in this country are treated like pond scum. Actually pond scum has more respect than teachers. Being a teacher I get blamed for everything. It is my fault a girl gets pregnant (not by me mind you), it is my fault a boy doesn’t get a football scholarship (can’t help the fact he was never in class), another boy is caught stealing at the local drugstore, a group of girls are fighting over who has the best clothes, and so on. But before a child becomes a doctor, lawyer, printer, car mechanic, or even a self-righteous real-estate investor (who thinks only his comments are important) they have to go through me first.

In other countries I do know teachers and police officers make up to three times as much than they do here in the US. But here again we want these services but don’t want to pay for them. Well it take money to buy the materials needed to fight a fire, keep order in the streets, and to educate a child. That is why I will always vote for tax increases related to firefighting, law enforcement, and education.

Advertisement dollars and selling tickets to events, that is what pays the high wages to sports figures.

snoopydad, call me old fashion, I love my child but I stand behind their teachers. There have been very rare exceptions where I sided with the child but it would not be in front of the child. The teacher and I would discuss it without the child present. If I would do what some of the kids these days pull off and get away with my butt would have been burning from a belt or if it was a smart mouth problem my taste buds would have found out what brand of soap in the bathroom tasted like. (BY THE WAY, I SURVIVED THOSE DAYS AND DO NOT HOLD ANYTHING AGAINST MY PARENTS FOR WHAT THEY FELT WAS THE RIGHT THING TO DO.)

It is just capitalism and a free market at work.

Mechany put me down for one right behind you LOL. You know I support what you have done for our country. I much rather stand behind you than in front of you.

Flaglady my parents were the same way. In fact the few times I was called to the Principal’s office (in the eighth grade) didn’t match the punishment I got at home. I much rather had the Principal’s version. And yes I survived those days as well.

For the most part a little over half of the parents in my district support the teachers. However it is one thing when a student asked why they got a failing grade but when a parent demands the grade to be changed is another matter. I had one parent who never returned my phone calls or was just not available. Well she had no idea that her child was missing school. At the expulsion meeting all seven of us teachers (this is in a high school), the student’s counselor, and the Principal got a tongue lashing from this parent even though we all had called. All of us gave the student the missed assignments but the student didn’t do them. Then we (all seven of us) were called to the Board Office because we failed her child. Anyway we were all cleared after the administrator seen that student received the grades he/she deserved.

I have had some really bad teachers as well as really bad bosses. In most districts they seem to be able to get rid of these teachers. In urban areas it is a different situation where they are just trying to get an adult into the classroom. They will take anyone who has a teaching certificate.

BTW my favorite soap was ivory LMAO.

Not close enough to proper conditions Dan. Need sand and 120 temps. Or maybe a rain jungle ala Vietnam or Panama.
It is okay if you want to stand behind me snoop, I am wide enough. And for those that stand behind us, is why we do what we do.

Education is not a "big business" enterprise. Law enforcement and fire safety are not a priority (until you really need them, rarely are they thought of in general). Entertainment and sports are "big business" because of the DEMAND by the consumers (you and me!). Teachers should be honored (as they are in UK!). Law enforcement officers are not the enemy! Firefighters should be the "gold-standard" for bravery!!!

Enough said!

I'm all for paying teachers more. With better pay, we can be more selective about who we hire to guide the next generation.

Flaglady, I too survived and do not feel any ill will against my parents.

Mechany, you won’t find me standing behind or in front of you. You WILL see me standing beside you! Lock & Load! Semper Fi

As Frenchmills stated: "You get what you pay for!"
