Thank you to the Secretary of State Police for finally cracking down on holiday shoppers who park illegally in handicapped parking spots. It is always hard to find a handicapped space anywhere I go with my 9 year old son he uses a walker to get around except for this time of year he has to use his wheelchair so that he won't get knocked down in stores by all of the RUDE holiday shoppers who just don't care and think they are above the law and can just walk over the top of him. It angers me when people do this. In our wood river walmart store this week one woman looked right at us and pushed her cart in front of him had I not grabbed my son's arm to stop him from walking forward she would have hit him with her shopping cart. So to all holiday shoppers please be respectful to children and adults who are handicapped and please don't park in spaces designated for them just because you are too lazy to walk.

Hey Tammy - how are you doing? I think the local police / mall security should enforce this all the time. My only true concern is that it's on private property not public property so unless the owners file a complaint - I don't know how you can issue a citation.

Here's something I posted in another blog comment:

Yea! The IL Secretary of State (SOS) Police are doing something! Seriously - how often do you hear this in any state. I think it's great to target handicap parking violators. Some learned that just because you have the handicap license or sign hanging from your mirror doesn't mean you can park there. You have to have the actual handicapped person with you.

Here are a few things for those that were ticketed. The first item is even though the new law states it's $500 - when the signage reads $250 - you can get your tickets reduced. In order for them to actually prosecute and win with the $500 fine they need to change the signs. When an ordinance is passed a City can only legally follow their own laws. They probably did vote to change the signs but put that little $250 mistake per violation on the backburner. How about the illegally parked SOS cars doing the sting? LOL - yeah, I saw them today and they are parked in NO PARKING striped zones.

Change the signs to $500 fines and park legally then you have my full support. No one should prevent a true handicapped individual from parking in spaces specifically designated for them. This should be a $1,000 fine - just post it properly!

More tickets need to be issued on a very regular basis. Those who use these spots and don't have the handicap person with them need to be stopped.

We need more than police to enforce the parking laws. Mall security should be able to issue tickets. Fines should include money fines and community service. Don't want to do the community service, then serve time.

I agree thank you all for the kind responses on this. It is so difficult for my son when it comes to the parking he is 9 now and weighs 43.5 lbs and I always have to park in handicapped so I can get the car door all the way open and get him in and out. When he is not with me I take down the placard and park at least ten parking spaces away from stores so that I leave all the closer parking for the elderly that may come and shop. I just wish everyone did this. I also wish that all stores would have some elderly parking similar to handicapped parking for those that don't have plates or placards but are still limited in the distances they can walk. Our hospital here in illinois has a few special parking spaces like it and it works out really well.

I know that some people will now days look to see if you are going to get on your cell phone and call police on an illegal parker. It's sad to see that some people feel that they need to play stupid just to get their convenience when they know fair and square that there ARE people that needs the handicapped spaces. Metro feels that they can't force people on the buses to sit in the back. The only time when a person gets up and moves if they see a person in a wheelchair or someone using a cane. Some routes in Illinois on Metro and just about 90% of the routes in Madison County, Illinois has low-floor buses. Meaning no steps. I think that we need to write to Washington and get a bill passed that would get more police officers to write tickets anywhere in the U.S. to anyone who chooses to play stupid.
