I would like to know what law permits law enforcement to issue traffic tickets based on a fuzzy picture of a license plate cross referenced with a motor vehicle registration database. If the crime is not personally observed by a law enforcemnet officer, how can it be enforced? The main problem here is that the registered owner (RO) of the vehicle gets the ticket, even if they were not operating the vehicle at the time the alledged offense occured. This puts the RO of the vehicle in an extremely awkward and unfair position. It falls on them to determine who was operating the vehicle, and then, either rat them out or make them pay the fine, while the RO incurs the points on their license. It's as if the RO is guilty until proven innocent. This has to be a violation of our rights. Are we not to be assumed innocent until proven guilty? On what legal grounds can they do this? Cameras are fine, as long as they are monitored by an officer, an officer who can testify in court about what he saw.

If it's your car, you are responsible. If it ain't you who was driving, make sure the person who broke the law pays you back. There's no innocent til proven guilty with a picture. If there's a picture it's guilty.

A pictures says it all. A police officer would be giving a judgement on what he saw. Don't speed, know who is driving your vehicles, then you don't have anything to worry about.

How do you think your rights are being violated? Cameras watch you all the time. They watch you at the bank, the gas station, department stores, in the mall, outside the mall.

bill01: No, if you are busted for speeding by a cop actually working and shooting radar - you (the driver) receive the citation not the registered owner. It doesn't affect the RO at all not even on insurance.

I believe it's a matter of laziness and revenue creation. The excuse that Gov Rod gives is an outright fib. This will create possibly $40-50M in revenue but I can guarantee it won't go towards adding 500 more troopers.

Heck, they need to pay for all the Governors flights to and from Chicago first - that's a few million right there.

Flaglady: Yes, they "watch" but to actually send us tickets via the mail is absurd. What about the speeder who has a few outstanding warrants and this picture is taken of him - if he were pulled over you WOULD remove a criminal from the streets.

It's a bad plan, shows lack of public safety, and anything can decrease from the 13,000 traffic deaths we had last year - anything.

It's a cash cow.... For the company that installs and maintains the cameras and for the Gov....... I wonder of it will ticket for any infraction or is there a margin......

Such as if I was going 65 in a 60.... Ticket or no.....

If you do the crime you do the time so to speak but there could be instances where you have to get somewhere as fast as you can like getting someone to the hospital. If an officer stops you for speeding sometimes if it's an legitimate cause for speeding the officer will let you off with a warming. Automatic would just be a ticket. I don't agree with that and will this replace jobs or help officers? I never hardly drive over the speed limit and I hate it when other drivers do because they are putting our lives in danger as well as their own.

A little about Red LIGHT Cameras.
My neighbor has gotten 3 red light tickets on the license # of his 2 Ton farm truck wich is a 1965 Ford.

The picture is of a 200? Chevy pickup with a camper like shell on the back.

After refusing to pay the fines he contacted a county police detective to check it out.
He found they mistaken an H for two 1's and it was an IL plate not MO.

They claim that 10 over won't get you "photo-tagged" - they claim to be looking for the true speeders like 15mph over and more.

I cannot see how such a device can discriminate this way with the vast amount of traffic on the interstates.

It's all about the revenue.

Just fr the record, If you run a red light and get a photo ticket, there are NO points assessed. This is merely a way for local municipalities to collect money from people. The was a report done here in St. Louis several months back, there have been more rear end accidents at intersections that have :photo enforcement" who wins you may ask well the city for collecting the money and the attorneys who represent the people rear ended.

I use plate covers that make it impossible for the camera to see a plate number, but an officer driving behind you can see just fine. I created it myself. It's because of half-wits that are OK with these kind of laws that allow the [police to intrude on our privacy with cameras. One day, when they are a victim of a crime, they will wonder why there are no POLICE ON THE STREETS. Follow the money stupid. It's NEVER about safety, it's ALWAYS about MONEY!

alan429: Remember, this is in IL we are speaking of and points don't matter - if you get 3 moving violations you get your license suspended except for hardship (work).

2FOXY4U2: Yep, the covers help distort the video capture while the clear spray virtually guarantees - no tickets.

Be safe out there and no one mentioned..watch out for cops driving 126mph!

I know that Florissant just makes you pay $100.00. No moving violation or points go on the RO's record. Just an easy way to gain some cash without the work....

2ndheart has stated one of the examples of how error prone the system is. One other example I heard was the guy who got a ticket in the mail for running a red light in his....get this.......fishing boat! I understand cameras are everywhere, that's not the issue. The issue is how the information is obviously processed without any human intervention. It should really be reviewed by an LEO and any questionable pictures thrown out.
I really like that video mr_wildflower. thank you. A glossy clear coat would probably have the same effect.

It's so sad to see our once free country putting their own citizens under surveillance. Put more cops on the streets. Fewer people will drive like idiots, and maybe you'll see a reduction in REAL crime as well.

Ole Gov Baglovich will be in rude awakening if someone asks the Civil Liberty Lawyers to step in...He will probally see that 50 million go out on legal fees fir the state...I would just sit back and laugh at his stupid idea.
