As reported by Fox 2 News, we will run out of IP addresses in about 3 years. IPv4 addresses that is. The standard IPv4 network address is 32 bits long. The new IPv6 network address scheme is 128 bits long. The Internet will not end, it will just change a little in the way devices connected to it are configured. There will be no real difference to end users. I really think this little fact should have been reported.

Here's the full script ...

"Say it isn't so-- the end of the Internet could be near --- and less than three years away.

Apparently more than 85 percent of available Internet addresses are taken.

And we will run out of addresses by 2011.

These aren't simply normal Web addresses you type into your Web browser. But many of those already taken include numerical Internet protocol addresses.

The solution: upgrade to a system called IPV6 which allows enough addresses for billions of electronic devices."

I think some of the producers may have shortened the "solution" portion, but I saw it in all the scripts I checked.

The report I saw aired the evening of 7/7, and the solution part was omitted. Thanks.

Actually, the same thing happened with books. Every published book had a 10-digit ISBN number, a unique number assigned to that title. They ran out of numbers and had to go to a 13-digit ISBN. Quite a bit of programming was required by booksellers and publishers but, hey, what are you going to do.

Yeah, I saw an article in one of the local news papers, it didn't mention a solution either. The other problem is that it may have left the impression to the average person that the internet would stop working. Not so, even without IPV6, it will still work, just no new addresses.

Yes I have Mr-Wild. As a matter of fact when we got our phone down here we had a 3 partyline.20 year's ago. That is how far back in the wood's we are. Now I can get dsl but the nabor can't he is further tahn 5 mile from substation. Go figure. But they will do with the Ip # like they did with phone number's. They will never run out of number's.

The problem is the story's lead: "the end of the Internet could be near." There was never a basis for that statement, as the planned upgrade to a new protocol was there well ahead of the "problem."

That's not a slam at the Fox2 crew, but at my profession in general. Too often we go for the easy emotion-kicker rather than the real story.

In this case, the real story was a boring technology note that the Internet is moving to a new IP protocol. Yawn. But that's what we need to report.

I've been to the end of the internet.
It's scary.
