A new movie called Stop-Loss (Click here to see my review) is about a policy by the U.S. military that requires soldiers to go back and fight in Iraq, even after they've fulfilled their military obligation.  Some call it a back door draft.

I didn't know the Stop-Loss policy existed ... and I was surprised to learn it's happened to an estimated 81,000  U.S. soldiers.

What do you think of the policy?  Should it be allowed? Is it fair?

I think that they should take a bunch of the non violent criminals in the prisons and offer them a 4 year hitch in Iraq in lieu of prison,,,,,

This is a long standing policy during a war. They'll also hold up your separation date.

I think its crap. If you did your time then go home. How are you going to just up and change the rules. djac you are right this is a long standing rule, but it is not put into effect immediately. It is put into effect if they run out of troops to go over there. This usually doesn't happen, and if it is by chance needed. The troops are allowed to take a 3 month leave before they are put into active duty again.

Whether there is a draft or only volunteers, the obligation is eight years. Everyone is told this at induction. If your term of active duty is two years, you will have two years of active reserves, and two years of in-active reserves. If you sign up for four years then you will have four years of in-active reserves. Until your eight years are completed you are subject to recall. When i joined the military in 1955 and when my son joined the Marines in 1985 we were told of this policy. Also, in time of war the time of service can be " for the duration" of the conflict.
I am supprized at Kevin's not checking facts instead of accepting the Holliwood hate America movie makers version. I get my news from Fox 2 because Fox 2 can usually be trusted to tell the facts. I will not watch ch. 4,5, nor 30 and will not beleive a thing printed in the Post-dispatch

We new about it and it is a draft but they not want us to know it..

I think it is wrong and I think they lie to us about a lot of stuff too...We are not hearing every thing that is realy going on...

Like there are lot of our soldiers who are murded by other military people and it keep quite..Hmmm DID THEY SEE SOMETHING THEY SHOULD NOT OF OR KNOW MORE THAN THEY SHOULD KNOW?

how about a law in some other countries that if you have some heritage there they can draft you in the military and the us department or the us embassy cannot help you. example if i vacation in greece they can draft me into the military there as if i was a citizen there. two years ago my brother went over there to transfer some property there in our names and he was asked if he served the military yet but guess what? he was born in the united states.

patriot1, It is my understanding that this is a film that celebrates the soldiers of our country and is not a hate bashing film. While some things would be necessary to get the point across, I hope that it makes individuals think.

Look at all the reserves continually being sent and resent and resent. The reserves are not meant for this type of service to this extent. We need to think about the mental health of these soldiers and take care of them by not forcing them to return under such circumstances.

I, for one, cannot wait to see the film.

I have not sen it yet, will have to check it out.
mr_wildflower , they do that in Los Angeles for repeat offender gang members, at least years ago when I lived there. They should do it nation wide. Gets them off the prison dime and may atualy turn them into respectfull, productive citizes if they make it back.....

I agree with Mr_Wild. It may be policy but it isn't fair to the people there. Less people are signing up because more people don't agree with this war. Thin out the prisons and bring the people home who have been there too long.

I have decided if i want to see the movie or not. My oldest son is in iraq right now...his thrid tour of duty. He has three little boys at home and the two youngest have not really seen much of their daddy. And i have to agree with mr. wild...i think that be a great ideal. Lets roll with it!

patriot1 is exactly right. It has always been in the contract signed at induction. I can say that when I was a recruiter, I made sure everyone I signed up read both front and back, including the Duration Plus Clause. Some were shocked and some just kept signing. As I told everyone, Read the Contract, Front and Back. I make no Guarantees other than whats in the contract. This is nothing new, and in my opinion, Not a draft. Anytime you sign a contract, Read It!
