The politicians seem to think that simply scattering a bunch of money around will promote the "US economy".  Too bad politicians don't have to pass a competency test before they get their hands on taxpayer money.  Simple logic proves how reckless their action was.

If a pile of checks are sent out, then a huge chunk of the money will go to food and inexpensive goods (Walmart type stores), and to expensive life-style buys (overseas supplied too).

The employment in other countries will be given a massive assistance by the purchases coming from the “US Stimulation Package”.

The politicians would have done better by, for example:

1          Giving out $billions in food stamps that get spent locally and help the poor.  This returns more than $1 into the community for every food stamp dollar spent.

2          Setting aside $billions more to extend Unemployment Insurance that also helps locally.  Include retraining assistance to help them get employed into a changed work environment.

3          Include using $10-20 billion for maybe clean fuels research, or redesign rebating to clean up dirty coal power plants.

4          And by taking a whopping $100 billion of it, and telling the American public that the money is up for grabs for the full cost of their purchase of installed operational wind and solar power collectors, of all sizes, on a first come first served basis. Exclude large power farms from this stimulation package but not the bulk purchases of with-in city limits units that cities may wish to install.  Many American people, cities and companies would jump in to get their chunk of the $billions.

Engaging these few things would cause instant effects and the money will be invested to promote the “US economy”.

The continuing effect would be us becoming world leaders in these and other clean power technologies, many Americans finding permanent good employment, the US becoming a little more energy secure, and investment in the US stock market would also be assisted upward by the effect of American companies gearing up for the manufacturing, sales, and educational needs.

Giving the poor, unemployed, and low paid people a few dollars won’t help them or the economy.  The permanent availability of many good paying jobs would be better for them and the current middle class.  Sort of like being given a fish as opposed to being helped to become a fisherman.

If you have a few hundred in the bank you might want to buy a few shares of Wal-Mart for a quick turnaround

IN responde to #1:
Why should everything always go to the "poor"? I may not be poor but there are things our family may need and could use the money. We could use new tires soon to get back and forth to work so we can pay our taxes (which support the poor). I am not ragging on the poor I am just tired that is always the answer as to where money should go. If you keep pumping money to the poor what is the incentive for them to change their lives. This country now has generations of welfare families, the cycle needs to be broken not constantly condoned.

If that money was used to train people for jobs that pay a living wage it would go a lot further. If vacant lots were cleaned up and used to grow vegetables and fruits instead of being used for crack sales that would stimulate the economy. If politicians were forced to pay for their health insurance we might see affordable health insurance for everybody. If campaigns were only funded by taxpayers annual two dollar donations instead of multi-million dollar contributions by corporations and lobbyists in exchange for favors later on it would benefit the average citizen more than the present system.

Weird I agree with you on most of your points. Just because there is a veggie garden is not going to stop crack sales. I totally agree about training for jobs. I would like to add if people refuse to take the training to get a job or better themselves they should have consequences unless there was a legit reason why they coudn't.

If they were required to have a medical excuse that precludes them from having gainful employment you would see a sudden rise in doctors who specialize in making that diagnosis instead of treating patients. If, on the other hand our government paid for medical school and required four years service in exchange for the training, to be served in clinics where that determination would be made, I think we would have a sudden increase in healthy people. The government could start a program where you get free training in exchange for public service. The public service pay would be based on minimum wage.

Kadas-
Clinton signed into law a five year limit on welfare in 1996.
The only welfare being paid is to the wealthy.

I agree with you weird. I think they should go to the kind of docs they send me to when I'm hurt. If it ain't hanging off or broken they send me right back to work. If you are legitimately hurt then cut you a break, but if not you were out working.

When I said "the Poor and suffering", that includes those suffering because of job loss or those having to work at low paying jobs because so many of the good jobs have gone overseas. My idea promotes more local middle class level employment.

If we took China`s Favored Nation Trading Status away from them and taxed their imports at the same level as other countries that would be a souce of funds to start an education program for people who have lost their jobs to overseas competitors. More unemployment or handouts aren`t the answer, education is. If more people had a little more education back in 1992 NAFTA would have been stopped or at least amended to take some of the bite out of it. If more people knew what was about to happen in reguard to Chinese imports we would have demanded tarrifs on Asian goods instead of giving them Most Favored Nation Trading Status.

Just take your check, that is if there is one when the Democratic Congress is finished, and take care of your own job, if you have one, and let the Government do their job.
Veggie gardens in the ghetto, where do you come up with this nonsense?
Education? The people who want education will almost always find it one way or another. You can't throw good money at people who don't want an education. It's so much easier to sell crack.

Right-moves...In the city of Philidelphia many vacant lots have been converted into lush vegetable and flower gardens by the local citizens. Have you ever heard of Joseph Black or Amy Gerth? They used a $7,000 grant from the State of Missouri to buy six lots from the city of St. Louis. They then sold shares for the price of $500 apiece to people who wanted to grow their own gardens. They call it New Roots Urban Farm and they are part of a nationwide movement back to our agrarian roots. The excuse that people who want an education will find a way to achieve one is also flawed. The desire to read and to learn has to be nurtured before it blossoms. We all want to have a better life but some ethnicities see a better life achieved through the sale of drugs, prostitution, and crime in general. Our government is slowly decreasing funds for education, or at least the purchasing power of public education. The Dept. of Labor`s statistics for 2007 show an increase in the cost of living of 5% while the official rate used to calculate what we spend on our schools is 2.3%. That is a loss of 2.7%, more than the increase. The "Democratic Congress" as you put it, is already finished with their part on the "stimulus package" and have been for several days. Now it`s up to the Senate.

Balderdash!
The Senate is adding unnecessary crap to the bill and I think it's unlikely Bush will sign it and no one will get anything.
As the man said, "how can you get a rebate if you don't bate ?"
Growing veggies in the city isn't going to help anything.

Maybe the Senate is looking into the incentives given to American corporations who provide jobs. It`s just possible that they are trying to close a loophole in that portion that would extend for years of tax relief for wealthy Americans. First you claim that there is no program for "growing veggies in the ghetto, where do you come up with this nonsense?" And after I produce proof of the existance of programs in St. Louis and Philidelphia you call it foolish for people to work to feed themselves. Giving people self-respect has never hurt anyone. Teaching children that working to create something is better than waiting for a free handout doesn`t sound bad either. But I guess that if you`re a Republican you won`t be happy about any of this because you don`t believe in handouts for the underprivileged but you do believe in sweet deals for corporations and personal friends. You see, that`s the problem I have with your train of thought. "Bush is almost gone, leave him alone, it`s beating a dead horse." and all the other crap you expouse justifying criminal activity in the White House. "Executive Privilege" should not be an excuse from prosecution in criminal activity.

Democrats and Repulicans alike have ignored all the problems plaguing our daily life. It is refreshing to hear about the "ghetto gardens", that is a step, albeit a small step. I was in business for a long time and received not ONE helping hand from either Dems or Reps in power---only roadblocks as I tried to insure my employees had a future. With the exception of Jim Talent who responded to a letter when the EPA threatend our business with foolish regulations that would do nothing during the Clinton years. PS I would like these recipients of handouts to take drug tests like our truck drivers had to do before they get any handouts.

Planting veggies in a vacant lot is not a small step, it's insignificant !
The only way to stop folks from sitting around waiting for a handout is to cut it off.
You think that sounds great to make a stupid statement like "criminal activity in the Whitehouse", and all you are doing is impressing the other Bush bashers on these blogs. There's no criminal activity, and there will be no phoney prosecution. The recipients of these handouts need more than drug testing, I saw a fellow on tv one night that was collecting because his wife died and he just couldn't take it. These phoney SOB's need to be cut off along with the baby machines. Enough is enough.
Maybe these lifeless leaches should plant their own gardens. It's out of hand and you know it, you're just afraid to say it. Get real!

Right Moves aka Hoghd23...Those "veggie gardens" are being planted by the recipients of welfare you call "lifeless leeches" who want to do something to better themselves. I saw a Senator on tv one night crying that he wasn`t trying to have homosexual sex in a public restroom. He was crying that he was being mistreated, even though he was still going to get health insurance for life, a pension, for life and all the free time he needed to pick up oral sex in bathrooms, all at the expense of taxpayers. Enough is enough. If Congressmen or Senators break the law I say cut off ALL benefits! No Secret Service protection, no pension, and you no longer can hold public office.

Then you better start cutting off Slick Willy's benefits.

Also it's not the leeches who are planting, are you telling me these welfare recipients are sfelling out $500 dollars to plant veggies?
I really don't believe that.
And what's this hoghd23 stuff, I don't understand.

If I were a legislator I would do whatever I could to pass laws to stop this madness. Clinton wouldn`t receive a penny or get Secret Service protection. Craig would be out of office until a speedy and fair trial declared him guilty or innocent. The President would no longer be allowed to pardon criminals if I could pass the legislation. There are a lot of measures I`d do everything in my power to make into laws that would benefit ordinary citizens, not corporations.

Maybe the CEO could learn to live on less than thirty million dollars a year plus stock options. Maybe if huge corporations weren`t given special treatment (no-bid contracts) and tax breaks it might open the door for more competition. But they wouldn`t like that because that might bring their profits into line with reality. Our President has seen fit to allow billions of dollars in no-bid contracts for friends of his and the Republican Party. Strangely those corporations also had relatives of his or Cheney`s on their boards of directors. Lots of the people who had to leave the Bush administration also work for those corporations, or at least they are being paid by these corporations. Maybe that has some influence on my dislike of the current administration.
