Worker dies at Long Island Wal-Mart after being trampled in Black Friday stampede

Updated Friday, November 28th 2008, 10:19 AM

Can you believe this?  Crazy people kill a guy just to save a few bucks on junk.

A Wal-Mart store was the scene of chaos this morning. Anderson/News

A Wal-Mart store was the scene of chaos this morning.

A worker died after being trampled and a woman miscarried when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island Wal-Mart Friday morning, witnesses said.

The unidentified worker, employed as an overnight stock clerk, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m.

Witnesses said the surging throngs of shoppers knocked the man down. He fell and was stepped on. As he gasped for air, shoppers ran over and around him.

"He was bum-rushed by 200 people," said Jimmy Overby, 43, a co-worker. "They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too...I literally had to fight people off my back."

Nassau County Police are still investigating and would not confirm the witness accounts. The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death. Police did say there were several injuries but weren't more specific.

Jessica Keyes was among the shoppers. She told the Daily News she saw a woman knocked down just a few feet from the dying worker.

"When the paramedics came, she said 'I'm pregnant,'" Keyes said.

Paramedics treated the woman inside the store and then, according to Keys, told the woman:

"There's nothing we can do. The baby is gone."

Before police shut down the store, eager shoppers streamed past emergency crews as they worked furiously to save the store clerk's life.

"They were working on him, but you could see he was dead, said Halcyon Alexander, 29. "People were still coming through."

Only a few stopped.

"They're savages," said shopper Kimberly Cribbs, 27. "It's sad. It's terrible."

I remember when a ZZ Top concert was general admission at Kiel Auditorium...... The weight of the crowd pushing trying to move up almost took my breath...One of the store windows was blown out from the weight of the people on the sidewalks trying to be first.... It was like 12 sardines packed into an 8 sardine can....... I guess they will have to start handing out line tickets for Black Friday now..... The world is in too big of a rush.....

These Black Friday sales need to change. Last year was my first and last time doing such. I realized that most of the folks I saw around me were RUDE and would plow over anything in their way.

Does the Black Friday sale really stimulate the economy - NO - one day and "only 10 per store" aren't enough. If these brilliant retail stores want to really increase sales and have a better bottom line - start the sale at a normal hour and continue it ALL weekend.

Saving maybe $100 on a laptop isn't worth shacking up over night being uncomfortable just to possibly get 1 of those 5 per store. Make it a Black Weekend sale starting the day after Thanksgiving and ends Sunday at close.

No more limited quantities per store, just only one per customer. This will stimulate the economy, help the bottom line of each store, and possibly save ALL employees' lives!

Just the usual greed and selfishness without concern for anyone but themselves.

Everything about our society, including the actions of our governments and courts, promotes this kind of attitude of me, me, me!!!

The individual is encouraged to grab every material thing he can, and to cater to his every physical desire.

It's his individual democratic right to pursue his every pleasure without regard to other people or even the country as a whole. That is why the country is in the financial situation it is in, and that is why the planet is so polluted and masses of people around the world are needlessly suffering and dying. We don't have to adjust our ways for the benefit of the human race, but instead are encouraged to pursue our every greed and selfishness. That is the evolutionary, or Satanic, philosophy of violence until death is the meaning of life.

I agree Speedo keep the sale all weekend long and overstock the shelves with the predicted items like gps or laptops. I dont think a few hours on Friday morning can help most of these retailers they'll still be in the red when it's over. Too bad about the death of the employee and that pregnant lady losing her child at the same store.

walmarts not the only stores that do it, its all the stores... they all elect to bring in a small quantity of goods and have a early time, where people rush the doors at opening and dont care what or whom is in the way...the owners of the stores love this...shame on them they should do away with the black friday sales, you can get all that stuff that cheap on the web

People are so cold hearted now adays that items on sell are worth more than a life, how sick is that...

4 years ago mom an me was at black fridays here at wal mart...A lady keep hitting me with her kart..She would not stop it after 3 realy painful hits to my back I finaly shoved the kart at her...

She then told me she would kick my butt so i bent over wiggled it and said her it is kick it..But mom came and that put a end to that and wal mart threw the lady out the store..

They had the whole thing on tape she was very agreesive for no reason..wal mart was worried we would sue them mom said no and told them we would not sue the lady eather...

It seemed she had mental problems.I know I am slow minded with a kids mind but this poor lady I think was wacky in the brain...

I don't go anywhere near the stores on Black Friday, I don't like crowds and sometimes I think normally nice people think it is an excuse for this type of behavior.

I am still trying to figure out what causes people to act like animals. Greed is the only thing I can think of. Greed by the people and greed by the retailer.

It's just not worth it. How can anyone who shopped at that Wal-Mart honestly enjoy their purchases? I'm sorry but I'll pay the higher price or take my chances shopping online. That's just sad.

It's Mob Action! These people will trample everything in their way to save a few dollars. I'd rather shop online and stay out of trouble plus you get free shipping and sometimes you aren't taxed.

I feel very sorry for the man that lost his life to those losers, but Wal Mart is TOO DANGEROUS. Did anyone see the documentary on Starz-on-demand about Wal Mart? Underpaid employees, no benefits (or little). People are STUPID if they think they are getting a black-friday deal at Wal Mart. I WANT TO GIVE EVERYONE A CHALLENGE!.....GET PEN AND PAPER FOR THIS ONE!!!! Go into a WalMart into the electronics section where you see the "alleged wonderful" deals on TVs, etc. Write down the make and model numbers, NEXT, go to the reputable stores, and try looking for the same model! You won't find it! Reason why? They contract for cheaply made products to sell for less, and YOU, the consumer thinks you are getting a bargain! How did I know that? When I was 19, I got a new TV, and when it crapped out near the end of the warranty, I called Emerson Corp (made the TV) and they told me "It was especially made for Walmart", so basically, I had a piece of junk that lasted 2 years....LESSON TO BE LEARNED here! I'm 37 now, and much smarter now, but I would like someone out there to take my challenge. You'll find it's true! Don't get sucked-in by Walmart!.....TOO DANGEROUS!

Walmart lets ONE guy, a night stocker, open the door to let hundreds of people in at once to purchase the $99.00 television (or whatever) they only have five of? Where was the big money maker, the store manager?

Wal-Mart alone is crazy but when you add Black Friday......did it once, yes, only once..and won't do it again! ..the savings amounted to very little, if any and health wise, it is not worth it!

People are rude and stupid everywhere today, and it raised its ugly head on this day, and all other days like it! You couldn't pay me to go to those places on Black Friday, the name alone would make me stay away..Why do people want to say 'yeah, man, I got one!!!" It doesn't do a darn thing for them, they haven't really gotten a bargain, and look what they are now guilty of. I don't think they will EVER find the people responsible for somping this soul to death, and the man's relatives SHOULD sue Wal-Mart for promoting an event that causes a death!!! All for the sake of a few bucks for Wal-Mart? Maybe WM should pay instead!!!
