POST ENDORSES BARACK OBAMA

January 30, 2008 -- Democrats in 22 states across America go to the polls next Tuesday to pick between two presidential prospects: Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

We urge them to choose Obama - an untried candidate, to be sure, but preferable to the junior senator from New York.

Obama represents a fresh start.

His opponent, and her husband, stand for déjà vu all over again - a return to the opportunistic, scandal-scarred, morally muddled years of the almost infinitely self-indulgent Clinton co-presidency.

Does America really want to go through all that once again?

It will - if Sen. Clinton becomes president.

That much has become painfully apparent.

Bill Clinton's thuggishly self-centered campaign antics conjure so many bad, sad memories that it's hard to know where to begin.

Suffice it to say that his Peck's-Bad-Boy smirk - the Clinton trademark - wore thin a very long time ago.

Far more to the point, Sen. Clinton could have reined him in at any time. But she chose not to - which tells the nation all it needs to know about what a Clinton II presidency would be like.

Now, Obama is not without flaws.

For all his charisma and his eloquence, the rookie senator sorely lacks seasoning: Regarding national security, his worldview is beyond naive; America must defend itself against those sworn to destroy the nation.

His all-things-to-all-people approach to complicated domestic issues also arouses scant confidence. "Change!" for the sake of change does not a credible campaign platform make. But he remains a highly intelligent man, with a strong record as a conciliator.

And, again, he is not Team Clinton.

That counts for a very great deal.

A return to Sen. Clinton's cattle-futures deal, Travelgate, Whitewater, Filegate, the Lincoln Bedroom Fire Sale, Pardongate - and the inevitable replay of the Monica Mess?

No, thank you.

And don't forget the Clintons' trademark political cynicism. How else to explain Sen. Clinton's oft-contradictory policy stands: She voted for the war in Iraq, but now says it was a bad idea. She'd end it yesterday - but refuses to say how.

It's called "triangulation" - the Clintonian tactic by which the ends are played against the middle.

Once, it was effective - almost brilliant. Today, it is tired and tattered - and it reeks of cynicism and opportunism.

Finally, Sen. Clinton stands philosophically far to the left of her husband, and is much more disciplined in pursuit of her agenda.

At least Obama has the ability to inspire.

Again, we don't agree much with Obama on substantive issues.

But many Democrats will.

He should be their choice on Tuesday.

Is this an attempt to get Obama into the general election where The Post bets he would lose to Romney or is this a case of it is what it is.

It's gonna be Hillary and McCain.... Probably be the most interesting Election in history...

Question is who is going to be the choices for Vice President.......

Oprah really hurt Obama.... Most men don't like Oprah

I cannot support a candidate who voted, "Present," instead of yea or nay on most issues as a Senator. I look to people from the state he comes from and most that I`ve heard say he supports the Greater Chicago region instead of the whole state. I also do not like the idea of an Australian telling Americans how to vote.

Interesting John and all. After the unexpected avoidance of Hillary, anything seems possible at this point. What a campaign!

Have never seen that, kurkel. Love it. lol

When I look at Obama, I see green. And he is always complaining how hard it is to run against the Clintons. If he can't handle the Clintons, how is he going to handle leaders such as North Korea or Iran. Well he can run to Auntie Oprah, but she doesn't know how to run a country.

Everyone, including me wants change....well booting Dubya out of the white house is BIG CHANGE.

Well one thing I can say for the Clintons...the foreign leaders always did like them. We ALL know ol Bill can talk people into alot of things.

Obama lost my respect when he and Oprah tried to turn the future of our country into a Hollywood side show.

My name is Barack Obama...I'm for change. Change in Washington. Change in the White House. My campaign is based upon...change. Change is good. If elected, I will change things...because, change is good and needed. Have I mentioned I'm for change? I bet you think all I think about is change... you're right of course... because change is necessary ...and good. I can't remember if I ever changed anything that turned out bad. I am a good changer. So vote for me ...and change. I can even change changes. Hey, if necessary I can make change. Hope I can count on your vote. Don't change your mind... push that hanging chad all the way out... for change. Remember...

Obama the changer!

Just another "non-endorsement endorsement" The NYPost is the right side paper in New York while the NYSlimes brings up the left side. This is like the Times endorsing McCain.

If Obama is the left's candidate then the Post will trash him. If McCain is the (I just can't call him 'right") right's candidate then the Times will trash him and you'll hear more about the Keating 7 than you ever wanted to know.

This is nothing more than the press trying to trash candidates.

QUESTION: Instead of "CHANGE" why doesn`t some candidate call for a return to honesty and decency?
ANSWER: What the Hell does honesty and decency have to do with politics?

weird as you know you and I have agreed on so little but today I have to agree with you 100 percent on everything you have said here.

Hogsmellgood I too am looking to see what he is changing but I have heard nothing from him that he is changing, I only hear a word change my question is WHAT - that is why I call him a golden tongue talker with no action. He has really hurt Southern Illinois.

I believe Illinois has had more dishonest politicians than any other state in the nation, as in felony dishonest, that is. Look at the Daley political machine that ran Chicago for so many years. The list goes on and on. I personally think Obama will be adding his name to that list before long. I`ve talked about government accountability many times before but now I would like to see some candidate accountability. We seem to have CHANGED from elections chosing the best candidate for the job to some perverse form of awarding an Oscar for the Best Performance.

Weird hit the nail on the head. The best performance wins! We really have to get back to a president who shows integrity, character and backbone. These days the guy with the best hairdo wins. You see what that got us GDub and Slick Willy. We can't continue on this road. We have to have a change in POLICY starting with a broken bureaucracy. Stop this crazy method of choosing the most important job in the world.

Republicans and Democrats are up in the air on this campaign so far. The issues are taking a back seat to performance.

Do the speeches make you feel good or do the speeches answer how the problems will be solved.

I do not want a performer - I want someone that that will take action when it is necessary, and who will address the issues of the country. If you could get a straight answer from any question from Obama - it might make some sense but I have a hard time understanding him between the uh um uh um uh um when he is asked anything. Obama has hurt Southern Illinois by not acknowledging we exist. In his eyes only Chicago is Illinois.

Experience matters inasmuch as getting legislators to back your proposals. The idea that we should do something for the country instead of asking what the country can do for you needs to be revived in politics. JFK made this request of all Americans but politicians appear to be exempt. Special interest groups fund the campaigns so they get special compensation later on. Elections and campaigns should be funded solely by our donations we give on our annual income tax return. When that money is gone the commercials end. Then maybe those commercials would have some substance instead of slander.
