There is a renewed campaign to reduce the national speed limit to 55 again.

From our national FOX web team story ...

"Nearly 15 years after it was removed by Congress, the effort to limit driving speed in the United States to 55 mph is back.

The national 55-miles-per-hour speed limit was introduced in 1970s.

Proposed by President Nixon and enacted in January 1974, the nationwide speed limit was supposed to be a temporary emergency response to oil shortages and was to expire in mid-1975, but Congress quickly made it permanent."

Do you think this will make any difference? Can you drive 55 again?

I don't think I can do it! That drive to Columbia is sooooooooo long when you have a 55 mile an hour speed limit.

Did you know politicians were thinking about this?  This is the first I'd heard about it!

I don't think I could do it again either! I know that when you go to the Lake of the Ozarks doing 65 almost 70 mph, it takes 2 1/2 hours to get there from STL. I couldn't imagine the drive going down doing 55 mph the whole time!

hey jill here is an intresting story. a man a knew got a speeding ticketa day after the 55mph was put in place in the 70s. so he did research then when called to stand in front of the judge he had told the judge that he was in violation of a federal fuel conservation law and what was the penalty for that and the judge just looked at him and said dismissed.

so what will the penalty for violating a fuel conservation law now?

I drive 55 now as I don't drive on Highway's. But I think they still need a lower one on the interstate's . Just my opinion.

Oh I would rather see the speed limit lowered than the drinking age.

Who said I ever did drive 55? Cruising speed years ago (1997-2001) was much higher than the posted speed limit. I then matured - family etc.

I think the speed limits at 65/70 are fine. It's the people who now drive too slow, too erratically, or too fast that cause problems.

Ten miles an hour over a posted 65mph speed limit isn't too fast mainly if you are on open interstate with little traffic.

Let's talk economics - certain cars do better at 60 while others do better at 75. It all depends on what speed the traffic is flowing. I find 74mph (cruise and a/c on) the best speed to reach around 29-31mpg - not bad for 260hp!

It didn't work before, and it won't work again. And, b8kedbeans, the 55 mile per hour speed limit wasn't a federal fuel conservation law (although it was pitched as that). In fact, no federal speed limit law was even passed. What they did was to tell the states that if the state didn't pass the 55 MPH limit, the state would not receive and federal highway funds. Guess what all the states did? So, no federal law, just 50 state laws.

I could easily drive 55...unless of course I start jammin' my music; then I have to catch myself; lol; when I look and see I'm up to 80:) OOPS.

so i guess the states got blackmailed by the federal government then and it is the same as the federal government saying it no difference.

I could possibly drive 55, but its the others that are still driving over 70mph, that I would worry about. Its bad enough going down I-270 with the varible speed and having people pass like you are standing still.

I could drive 55. I drive 60 on the highway in the inside lane and I feel like I'm gonna get ran over. I figure they have 3 other lanes to go around me. Going 60 saves on gas.

I get sleepy at anything under 80 miles per hour on the interstate. I absolutely hate city driving - it's too slow.

One of the biggest problems on highways is not the fast speeds it the fact that people drive at different speeds. Why this is such a problem is because most people can not follow simple lane laws. If you have multiple lanes you should be in the right-hand lanes while cruising at speed the left most lane is a PASSING lane NOT a fast lane. Many highway accidents happen when a faster car approaches a slower car from behind and either has to make a move to anther lane or brake suddenly. IL and Mo both have left lane laws I don’t remember them word for word but in IL you are not supposed to be in the left lane for greater than a mile and only for passing a slower vehicle. Now in Mo if I remember correctly and it hasn’t changed it is against the law to travel in the leftmost lane in a manner that impedes the flow of traffic in that lane regardless of the speed limit, this means that even if you are doing 60 mph in 55 in the left lane and the traffic flow is at 70 you are also breaking the law not just the ones speeding. There is a safety reason that the passing lane is on the left it’s because that’s the driver’s side of the car that is being passed and they can see that side better than the passenger side. People need to realize that while yes fast speeds can kill its not always the speeders fault that the accident happened its that person doing 10 under the speed limit in the wrong lane that can be just as dangerous. In Germany they have the Autobahn one of the largest and fastest highway systems in the world and it has a low traffic incident rate one because lane laws are stri

are strictly enforced and two in Europe in general it’s a privilege to drive (and very expensive and testing is much more strict) where over here everyone thinks they have to rite to drive and drive however they want.

The comment that speed kills applies to all speeds not just fast ones, many people forget that.

If I am incorrect about the left lane laws it has been a while since I have read them and they may have changed.

i say drop it to 55,it's about time to start conserving fuel and saving lives, and if people think they can stop a vehicle just as quick going 75-80 in an emergency, better redo the math

The car I bought was built for speed and I usually travel the left lane. I don't like rock chips etc so it's safer and I seldom have a faster car coming into my lane. I cannot see 55 again except on two lane roads. Its just too slow. As for conserving gasoline just get a four banger and you've already saved ten mpgs.

if you bought a car built for speed and drive 80 mph, evidently conserving fuel or the price of fuel is of no interest to you,i'm talking about the average person coping with the high fuel prices, maybe slowing down nationwide would help,i'm for it
