VATICAN CITY (AP) -- Believing that the universe may contain alien life does not contradict a faith in God, the Vatican's chief astronomer said in an interview published Tuesday.

The Rev. Jose Gabriel Funes, the Jesuit director of the Vatican Observatory, was quoted as saying the vastness of the universe means it is possible there could be other forms of life outside Earth, even intelligent ones.

"How can we rule out that life may have developed elsewhere?" Funes said. "Just as we consider earthly creatures as 'a brother,' and 'sister,' why should we not talk about an 'extraterrestrial brother'? It would still be part of creation."

I see nothing wrong with thinking there are others somewhere out there. If not, it is an incredible waste of space.
Hopefully, we are not on their menu......

Ah, Mechany ... you remember the Twilight Zone episode, eh ... "To Serve Man"!

I always thought it was rather egotistical to think we were the only ones out there ...

Any other good recipes, Jill?
I can't wait for the next Enquirer with a picture of Benedict XVI staring at E.T.
You know it's coming.

Jill, you said exactly what I have always thought: It is rather egotistical to think we are the only ones out there.
Are they green dudes with bulging eyes? IDK, but hopefully they have treated their planet better than we have treated ours.

I love the twilight Zone.... Somebody was drinking a lot of coffee when they wrote some of those episodes

Yeah Jill, and many other Sci Fi books and movies have that theme. In the book War of the Worlds they used our blood ad fertilizer.
Yup, egotistical would be an understatement.
Would be fun to meet an E.T. just to ask them hows it going.

Since we are in the faith catagory,

I don't know if there are aliens or not, but this is my Biblical thought about E.T.s

Jesus said "there is NONE good, but God".
Jesus died ONCE for the propitiation of sins.
If there are others out there, they are sinners as well, and they don't have a propitition for their sins. So therefore, I don't believe that there are aliens out there.

Why did God make the universe so big? To show us how big He is. The Bible says He measured the heavens with the span of His hand. The furthest quazar measured was 12 billion light years away. Do the math, we have a big God!!

Just my thoughts.

I'll wait to say, until I read, if and how He chose to reveal His love and salvation to them.(We don't have enough discussion on translation as it is). If they exist they are surely His creation. We just have to remember Adam wasn't given dominion over all the creatures above the heavens, just the ones on earth.

I am a Web Producer at KTVI Fox 2 News, AKA the Web Chick. I am a scuba diver (if you could not tell) and believe it or not, a certified underwater pumpkin carver (really, I have a card!). I always keep a candy jar on my desk (right now it has a variety of hard candies, what's your favorite?) along with a box of crayons, for those times when you just want to color ...
