We're all talking about Thursday's FOX 2 town hall meeting, "Changes on Tap" where we're looking at the past, present and future of the St. Louis economy, using the A-B takeover and Chrysler plant closings as a jumping off point.

Here's my question: We report so much doom and gloom--layoffs, downsizing, rightsizing, plant closings, etc.  Is the St. Louis economy really that bad?  If there are bright sides, what (and where) are they?

Share your information so we can pass it along during the meeting.

Well let me see if I can put this in simple terms.......

A big oil company from Mount Pilot came to Mayberry and after several attempts they bought out Wally's Gas Station..... After they took over they sold off all the assets at the station..... All the tools, the tow truck, and all the inventory..... Then they fired Gomer and Goober and replaced them with someone with less skill and who will work for a much lower wage to just pump gas.... All of the money from the till went to Mount Pilot and the economy of Mayberry suffered..... Gomer and Goober were unable to find work, lost their house, went on unemployment and welfare and eventually were seen hanging out with Otis and getting drunk all the time.... Eventually the big oil company decided it no longer owed Mayberry anything and moved the entire operation to another county where they could turn better profits........

No I don't see any bright sides........

Well the bright side to all of the things that are happening economicly is that we can only go up from here. LOL...

Our city should look at environmental based industry to infuse the lifeblood back into our veins...

Yes Elliot, St. Louis' economy is THAT bad and in a couple of months when Chrysler closes it's doors on some 2400 workers, it's going to get worse. Not only that but I feel that InBEV will win over AB and lord only knows what kind of changes they'll have on tap. (no pun intended) Bright side? I don't see a bright side to the enconomy in St. Louis. I feel we have some very difficult challenges ahead of us that many of us WILL NOT meet.

well lets see.....there are two bright spots i can think of ...first we will save on gas costs when we lose our jobs. then we will save the mo. government money when we run out of unemployment insurance and are to discouraged to look for non existing jobs. i work for chrysler on the first shift ......for now.
