HeyElliot's Blog

I've never thought of myself as a whack-o Birkenstock wearing environmental type, though in the past few years I've probably gotten close to that stereotype.  I'm an avid recycler, I've converted most lamps to CFL bulbs, and most recently I've become very aware of what I'm eating.  I'm trying to cut-out processed, prepared foods--the stuff that makes up so much of the American diet.

A couple months ago while shopping, I noticed a meat case filled with grass-fed beef.  I wasn't familiar with it so I did some research and found some pretty remarkable health claims relating to grass-fed beef.  Supposedly it's lower in calories, fat and cholesterol but higher in protein and amino acids.  I also found that a large grass-fed farm is in a southern Missouri town called Doniphan.

Tonight at 9 (Thursday, April 24) Contact 2 investigates the grass-fed claims and takes you to the farm where thousands of grass-fed Angus cattle graze.  Is it really healthier, and perhaps even more important, is the meat safer?  Learn why farmers say grass-fed cows pose almost no risk of contamination to humans.

The problem isnt what the cows ate while they were alive its what happened to them after they were slaughtered.

Isnt that where beef picks up contamination? After or during processing?

These people who claim they are "healthier" thanks to grass fed cows have most likely been eating better all around. Veggies etc.

Good morning Elliot...

I am looking forward to that story tonight. I stopped eating beef and pork last May. I feel so much healthier for it....and now it does not make me feel deprived at all. I choose organic chicken and turkey...and eat plenty of fresh fish too. Last summer I lost 40 pounds and I'm sure the change in my diet had something to do with it.

Elliot- we have switched our limited red meat eating to Bison only. It is leaner, more protein and iron. Costs more so we eat less. Michelle- where do you get your organic chicken? I am looking to maybe stock up and save some money??

I was probably in my 20s before I knew that cows ate anything other than grass, lol. I guess I just never thought about it because the cattle around our home grazed all the time.

This is all very interesting, but until the grocery stores start putting it in their stores we are really kind of stuck unless of course we buy a side of beef from them.

Good news, Cuteypops: Whole Foods in Brentwood (and soon in Town & Country) stocks grass-fed beef, as do many Schnucks stores. The meat comes pre-packaged in vacuum-packs with a 3-week shelf life.
Cabowabostl: I enjoy bison as well. It's a very lean, tasty meat that's great to grill.

So glad I don't have to worry about any of this! Once a year we butcher our own beef, later in the year our own hog, we have farm fresh eggs and also butcher chickens a few times a year. Beyond that, all our vegetables, including potatos as well as some fruits are grown here also.

The most dangerous part of the cattle and beef floors where most of our meats are grown is not meat by products or corn......it's the steroids and large dose anti-biotics. A hog that used to take 180+ days to get to shipping weight now takes 90 days or less! Same principal applies to the beef industry. I'd be more worried about this than whether or not they are grass or corn fed......

corn feed means more fat less muscle... feedlots mean cornfeed, and less exsercise... grass feed means more exsercise and less fat more muscle, so prolly tougher meat...pros and cons

Sounds like the price of beef will be going up too......

I also agree with Rosie.... Less Fat means tougher steaks....... When I buy Kansas City Strip at D J's meat market I also pick out a cut with a litle fat around it.... I know it will cook up so tender that you can eat it with a fork only..... You just have to resist the fat and leave it on the plate.......
