Teach the parents to back up the teachers when the little darlins are not doing what they are suppose to be doing.

Teach the parents and student manners.

Teach the parents to be parents. Hold them accountable if not co-operating.

Make the students come to school. Have consequences for those who are truant.

Clean up the schools and do not allow students to destroy it.

Get parents involved. Don't blame everything on the teacher. A children's first teachers are their parents.

There are two bloggers who troll this website who have made it know that they work for our schools or want to work as teachers, both I'm sure right here in the Lou.

Here is a copy and pasted segment of what baileygirlsmom has posted:

"________ you and the horse you rode in on."

And

"TAKE YOUR PITY AND SHOVE IT"

I'm sure we know what word is supposed to be inserted into the blank.

Also our very own Mutatis (with the fake peace sign as an avatar) is an aspiring TEACHER. Isn't that lovely? With all his misspelled words and grammatical errors, not to mention his loathesome venom that is the core of all of his posts.

Yes, these two bloggers are shining examples of what is waiting for your children in the public school system.

Teach them manners? LOL Boy they have YOU pegged, huh baileygirlsmom??????

Did someone say something?

Back to the original blog concerning SLPS. Fist SLPS has well over thirty years of problems that need to be addressed and corrected. This starts with the School Board and goes down to the students. I have stated on several other blogs possible solutions to correct some of the problems but do not expect microwave results. But someone must have been reading my suggestions as there continues to be changes some of which I have suggested on these blogs. However, history continues to repeat itself as it has with each new school year for the last thirty some years.

Again here are some of the problems SLPS need to address. First involves the district office hiring “qualified, competent” people instead of aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, husbands, and or wives for the various positions within the district. For example, if anyone has visited the HR department I am sure you have experience the professionalism (actually lack thereof) of the HR staff. Then teachers who have applied who have been told “I’m sorry we don’t seem to have your resume on file” by the HR staff. Then people wonder why SLPS can’t keep or get qualified teachers and this is only one department.

Next are leadership positions. To many administrators at 801 North 11th are only concerned about the title and their image than the duties of the position. Again remember the hiring qualified people instead of promoting friends and relatives. With all positions come responsibilities. Unfortunately the people in these leadership positions are more concerned about “having the power” and telling other people what to do than actually doing their job.

Then there is planning for the next school year. Here is where SLPS is separated from all the other schools in the area. Administrators for suburban and private schools will start planning for the next school year during this school year. Taking a look at everything from student enrollment/recruiting to educational programs to implement on the first day of school. SLPS however starts their planning for the current school year in January. Meaning one semester will go by and the Board and other Administrators will buy educational programs in hopes to train teachers and get students to improve their MAP scores from January to March. This is like cramming the night before a test. Then will scrape the program they paid half a million dollars for because there was no improvement in test scores. Then the process will repeat itself next year. Guess what this has been going on for over thirty years.

Now for the teachers. SLPS has a severe shortage of certified teachers in just about all subject areas. Remember the HR comment about lost applications? SLPS in some cases is just happy to have a warm adult body in the classroom. So they will hire anyone from any teaching program as long as they have certification or will get their certification to teach. Here is where the problem lies. Not all college/university teaching preparation programs are created equal and you can tell the difference between various teaching prep programs within the St. Louis area. Then there is the teachers’ union who protect teachers who should not be in the classroom for the sake of seniority. Just because a teacher has been in the classroom longer doesn’t mean they are a better teacher. One can spot teachers who teach thirty lessons over thirty years opposed to one lesson taught for thirty years. Time and needs change and teachers need to be able to adapt. Plus the union protests nearly every professional development session saying teachers need “meaningful” professional development. Well part of that is true considering each year administrators go over how to write lesson plans and how to manage classrooms. Excuse me but writing lessons plans are done in the first year teacher prep classes in college. If you can’t manage a classroom even in an urban setting after a couple of years then you shouldn’t be teaching. However, the union doesn’t offer up any professional development topics except how to complain about administration.

Then lets not forget about the students who also need to be held

accountable for their academics, attendance, and behavior. Remember anyone who wants to learn will learn. A problem with the SLPS student especially in “neighborhood” schools is they do not see the value of education as their suburban counterparts do. But even this is changing as we are now seeing other school districts such as Riverview Gardens, Jennings, Hazelwood, and Ferguson-Florissant are experiencing the same problems encountered in SLPS motivating students to do well on standardized tests.

SLPS is a district of extremes. They have Metro High School that is ranked nationally in the top 100 schools as well as Vashon and Beaumont (I am sure there are a couple of others) that can barely meet the “meeting expectations” on the MAP scale. Then there are the politicians who keep changing the rules when schools within SLPS (as well as Kansas City) who do meet their “standards” for education as set for suburban schools. Make one set of rules for everyone not one set for these students and another set of rules for these students.

Again there are many problems in SLPS that need to be addressed. Some are the responsibility of the parent while other problems SLPS need to resolve. But it is not fair to place all the blame on the parents, administrators, teachers, or students where in reality everyone is at fault. Remember education begins in the home but it takes a community to raise a child.
