The Warrenton School Board has banned the use or display of cell phones during school. The superintendent had wanted the phones classified as contraband - just like drugs or weapons. Why? because bullying and cheating have gone high-tech.

What do you think?

The Superintendent is in a dream world. Should they be banned during school hours - absolutely. This should be applicable to teachers also.

Is a cell phone a drug or weapon? Well, I've never smoked/snorted my cell phone so I can assume it's NOT a drug! As for a weapon, oh, these babies hurt when you get hit in the shins. LOL - not a weapon (most of the time at least)!

I think they are going a bit overboard. Just forbid cell phones from being "powered up" during school/learning hours. I do think they should be allowed during a lunch break - JMO.

Set a zero tolerance policy for both students and teachers on cell phone usage - keep them turned off.

Cell phones are stolen very often in school... They are the electronic version of passing notes.... Kids sit and text with the phone hidden quite often.... Also have to cinsider the case of the girl getting her picture taken in the shower and the pic going to everybodys phone ...... They have a lot of easons... It's just a matter of time that the schools will have the technology to disable phones inside the school.....

There are pros and cons for everything

I don't see a need for them during school hours. So I agree with the decision, but then I'm getting old and set in my ways too. lol

I think they had an issue with girls taking cell phone pics of other girl in the locker room. Then its sent to everyone in school with a cell phone.

The school hears about it days later and has no way of know who started it since its beenpasssed around so much.

Parents get mad and say "but my kid didnt start it, it was sent to them, you cant punish them it isnt fair" and the schools loose total control over the situation.

Thats what started the issue I think. This happens more often the the you may think.

A cell phone isnt a right is a privilage and the school has the right to limit their use when they are the ones in charge of those kids.

Our school does not allow cell phones ON during school hours and there IS a zero tolerance level. If it is on during the day the cell phone becomes property of the principal....period!....
You can have it on before and after school NOT during ....for any reason..no how no way!....
And I like it....lots of reasons...good reasons for not letting it be on during the day. My son does not have a cell phone at all so maybe I am a little partial to the other side....but it is still my opinion...thanks!

I feel cell phones should not be allowed in school. They are a distraction. One of the schools out this way says you can bring them to school, but they have to be turned in at the office and you get them back to go home with. I just don't see the need for a kid to have a phone there at all. Didn't we all get by using the office phone or pay phone in the hall to call for a ride if need be? When I was carrying mail I thought it was so stupid to see a little kid, I mean like lower grade school, hanging on the phone while riding his bike down the street. Tell me they're paying attn. to traffic!

USF....I think the issue is trouble with bullies and/or pedophiles or other such rif raf on their way home from school. Whether they walk or take the bus. Parents now a days feel safer if their child has a phone to call for help if need be.....

So that is why they allow them going to and coming from school...and I cant argue with that. Esp. with the way things are in the world today....it is a different world....

Well, you do have a point on that one. I agree. They just should not be allowed in the classroom tho.

I agree, no cell phones during school hours. As for contraband and stuff, no way....totally stupid. Unless they need to be classified under something in the handbook, then maybe but just to call it that, no way.

I think cell phones are too much of a distraction. I think they could have them on silent in their lockers where they could use them for after school activites and needing to arrange transportation.

I've seen them at a school where I worked. They weren't allowed but most students had them anyway. They would use them to call Mommy or Daddy when they were in trouble so the parent could come up and bail them out.

I agree, too, that teachers shouldn't use them while class is in session.

Between, the late arrivals to class, spending the time to discipline, sleeping in class, etc., how is anyone getting an education?

Good question Miss Daisy, I think a lot of the kids are "sliding" by. Who wants to teach a "delinquent"

It's just like anything else, turn them off while in any type of meeting, which I consider a classroom to be. However, I think it is important for individuals to be allowed to have them on them and not stored in a locker. Too many instances of violence going on today, a cell phone could save a life of someone you love.

I considered that too, LCF. In fact, I posted a blog where when you register for college you give the information to put you on a list to be texted in case of an emergency. But I've seen so much cell phone abuse in the high school where I worked where they weren't even allowed. Believe me, if a cell phone is on their person, they WILL use it.

Parents used to call and tell me to get them to the office immediately, it's an emergency. They'd stand at the phone and tell mom where the house key was and continue to talk. I'd have to interrupt and remind them that their class is in session and they need to return after hearing their casual conversation.

I think we have a problem of overcommunication today. I wonder how we ever got along b4 the days of being so connected!

Students can't take their boom-boxes to school and use them. All electronics should be left at home. School is for learning.

This is the EXACT reason our oldest daughter(13) does NOT have a cell phone! If she has an event to go to, she can BORROW mine to take.
However, I was pretty grateful to the kid who did have a cell phone on the bus that she used when the bus got in an accident because the school sure didn't call me to inform me she had been in an accident.

I also agree, teachers should NOT be allowed to have them/use them at school either!

I do not agree with the decision. Because they will ban it for student while teachers will have theirs. Also, they ban so much for the student while the teachers and staff walk around with theirs. Plus, when I my son gets sick at school the nurse doesn't even want to call home. She tells me stick it out. So, they use their cell phones when they need more during school. Because the School System tries to over run everything. As long as my kids are passing class and not disrupting the classroom then there is nothing wrong with cell phones. We all use them during work hours including teachers so the student should have equal rights as them. Since they are role models while during school hours. So if they are going to ban it then they need to ban it for staff as well.
