You ever heard the expression I need that like I need a hole in the head.

Maybe not that drastic but a new proposed million dollars monument for downtown East St. Louis comes close.

I did a You Paid For It report on it last night. The monument would be in the shape of a flower opening. called rebirth.. It would be put on a vacant lot flanked by a gas station and city hall, near the Metro Train tracks..just a few blocks away from a boarded up downtown. Right down the roa, streets that flood when it rains making them almost impassible because the sewers system is broken and the city hasn't had money to fix them..And I guess hasn't requested it from the Federal Govenment. But they're asking the feds for a million bucks for a downtown monument that won't do anything.

Monuments are like the icing on a cake..BUt in this case we're dealing with a problem cake that needs more than just a little icing. East St. Louis needs an over-haul from the ground up.

I couldn't believe it when I interviewed the Mayor about this..and he told me with a straight face it was a good deal.

He reminded me of the Mayor of Creve Coeur Harold Dielman when I questioned him about a $3 million dollar over-pass. In fairness to Dielman though Creve Coeur is in a lot better shape than East St. Louis, and can afforded to look at a frill or two..(Just wish we didn't have to pay for it)

But in the case of East St. Louis the new Mayor should stick with the basics. Things that citizens need to make their lives better, like sewers and streets, and jobs, and fewer abandoned falling down houses, and better schools, and community centers to give kids somewhere to chill...

East ST. Louis needs the basics...

 The ICING can wait.

I believe if there's an extra $1 million to be spent in East St. Louis - they should increase their police force and buy some new cars. The force was downsized years ago and with crime up, they need more cops on the beat. Who cares about a monument in the City - how about some protection!

Elliott Elliott Elliott. When are you ever going to learn, you can fix stupid.

Seriously, I enjoy your segments and wish there were clones of you sitting at every City Leader Meetings for all the Municipalities. But since we can't clone you, we as citizens need to take the initiative, stand up and speak up at these meetings. I know we all will come up with excuses as why we can't make it to the meetings as individuals. People do like to committ if they know there is a group standing with them so they don't feel like they are fighting alone.

I'm not one to believe in stereotypes or to spread that kind of tripe. Weather in East or West St. Louis I believe that the expendature of 1,000,000 dollars to erect a monument is fool hardy at best. Considering that the monument will cost over 1 mil. and that the monument is supposed to symbolize the cities rebirth I think that the best thing for E. Stlouis to do is work on the rebirth of the town before they go decorating the nursery. Just my opinion.

How long has it been since a really good mayor has been in office in ESL? I kind of like Carl for a while, but then he got the 'politician fever' and ended up not delivering.

Guys I found this one hard to believe..I wonder how the Mayor kept a straight face during the interview. I was hard for me to keep one..
If we were giving a You Paid For It of the year award this might be it.
