Climate Change and A Toll Bridge

On the next edition of The Jaco Report (Saturday April 21 at 6:30pm and Sunday April 22 at 8:30am), we look at both the changing climate, and the changing political climate around a new proposed toll bridge downtown.

 

This weekend is Earth Day, which started out a few decades ago as a celebration of the Earth's diversity, and since then has morphed into something more urgent. Our guest to talk about global warming, climate change, and its potentially catastrophic effects over the next few decades, is Dr.William Dannevik, head of the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at St. Louis University. Dr. Dannevik started out professionally as a physicist, helping design nuclear weapons at the Lawrence Livermore Nuclear Laboratory. His speciality now is climate change and climate modeling.

 

His point is fairly straightfoward: there is no longer any scientific debate about climate change. The only debate now is how much human beings have to do with it, and how fast the climate is changing.  The roadblocks to getting this across are twofold: the "flat earthers," people who refuse to believe global warming is real, and those who stand to make money from continuing the pollution that adds to global warming.

 

 Next, we talk about how the demand by Missouri that a new bridge over the Mississippi River be a privately owned and operated toll bridge is apparently dead. We look at the politics and big money decisions surrounding any new bridge, and talk with Rep. Russ Carnahan, congressman from Missouri's Third Congressional District and member of the House Transportation Committee.

The only way I would ever use a toll bridge is if the toll troll came out from under the bridge to collect the money. It would be worth the entertainment. I rather spend the toll money on gas and take another bridge. A toll is just another hidden tax (more ways to take more money for things we already pay for) I cannot support that pork project. If I want to pay for a pork project then I rather bbq some pork ribs.

THE TOLL TO DRIVE???

IM ALL READY PAYING TO DRIVE .

WERE IS THE FREEDOM??????????

SUPPOSE TO BE FREE.

NOT CAPITALISTICLY FREE , BUT NEW FREEDOM FREE , NOT DIMOCRATICALLY . BUT SYSTEMATICALLY , NEW BRIDGES , ROADS , HIGHWAYS , TRAINSYSTEM .

NEW HIGHWAY FOR CARS ONLY , NO SPEED LIMIT .

SAME WITH TRAIN SYSTEM .

BEFORE ANOTHER TRAIN ACCIDENT , CLOSE IT DOWN .

WERE IS THE SAFETY???????

Gee , JC even your liberal butt should remember when the Poplar St bridge was a toll bridge ! If they wanted people to pay then they should have kept it ! Just why did they turn it back into a free bridge and take the toll booths down then ! Why does Mo start this now? I don't see havin to pay for bridges and roads I already pay taxes to and they are either in poor or bad condition or screwed up have the time so these workers have jobs !
Take the highways that are asphalted ! They have a mix they can use where a tractor trailer can spin on it and still not make a dent in it ! Why not use it on the highways ! That so some guy every with a company can lean on a shovel for about $30.00 an hour or hold a sign ! We need a toll bridge like we have the voice to tell Fox to get rid of you !

The Missouri Dept of Transporation (MDOT) needs to rethink some upcoming construction. One - never close an entire interstate for major construction. I live in Illinois and look at the I-64 (OFallon/Fairview Hts) construction where they are actually ADDING lanes yet still remained open for nearly 3 years. Yes it was a bit of a headache but only slowed drivers down by no more than 10 - 20 minutes. Is it my understanding that MDOT isn't even adding an additional lane? If not, then your construction is a waste of taxpayers money (and drivers' stress). Another item - MDOT get a clue to a NEW BRIDGE from Illinois to Missouri - we (Illinoisians) are paying the full bill even though you claim that $25million is needed on the Missouri side - there's a grant waiting for you. And - a toll bridge would never pay itself off because most commuters would use the PSB/MLK and other free ones. And, isn't it true that about 60% of St. Louis City employment is from Illinois side? MDOT - maybe you need to follow the steps of IDOT (that's Illinois Dept of Transportation) they seem to be doing things more efficiently and painlessly. Thank you.

If people would just stay in Mo or in Ill we be much better? Just kidding.

All this bridge proposal is just pork in action. Its pay back for political donations.
Waite till they come up with the ultimate, The under the river tunnel. if you think building a bridge is expensive? try you hand at digging under water.

My only comment to all this is Thank God Carl officer is not the mayor of E St. Louis

You state "I'm a reporter for Fox 2". Reporters report, you're just a political hack.

Flat worlder, head in the sand... buzz words for somebody afraid to confront facts.

There is no concensus in science.

Science: The observation, identification, description, experimental investigation, and theoretical explanation of phenomena.

Not the collection of only facts that support your position and engaging lay persons to state your teory as fact.

You should start working with Tim Ezell carrying his cerials.

Purple Rain when was the Poplar street bridge a toll bridge? I'm pushing 60 and I don't remember it ever being a toll bridge. I think that the McKinnely birdg was a toll bridge. Correct me if I'm wrong, my memory might be faulty on this one.

Oh ya Simple it was a toll bridge ! I am 62 and have driven a truck for almost 35 + years and it was a toll bridge ! All you have to do is ask ! It was right after it was built and there was big boom over it they made it a free brigde ! I might be wrong but as far as I can remember that is true !

Toll bridge, why not? Another bridge should make environmentalists happy, less traffic congestion, less pollution, less energy used. Charging a fee to cross the river only hurts on class of citizen.

As for global warming, the articles linked to your initial article are an indication that there are an infinite number of possibilities of which humans have not one clue on how to predict weather or climate. Solar radiation, electro magnetic regulation and gravity control our weather. So much so infact that as the earth has run cylce of climate changes or patterns, species have come and gone. And maybe man will just be filtered out of the equation by the earth's own cycles. Human control of the climate? Now that is arrogant.
