I hope people don't start going to the Dr. just for antibiotic.I think sometimes they are prescribed to much anyway. It is a good thing if everyone can benefit.I don't have a Snucks close to me.So I would benefit anyway. But I hope it is for ALL people.

GM Jeanette... April.

I have a problem with Schnucks giving away free antibiotics. I took this sentence from a story I read this morning regarding a death in NY from Staph infection.. Seems like they will be helping this serious infection run rampant. JMO

"This isolated case does not pose a risk to the public, but it does alert health professionals to the need to reduce overuse of antibiotics and to follow stringent infection control practices at all times."

April, I posted this same blog yesterday, but you found the medication list, which was not available yet to the general public.

I think it is a good thing, but I also think Schnucks should have put a bit more info out there on who can qualify. Will they still be billing insurance companies and just not have a co-pay? Will they be billing Medicare or Medicaid and just not charge those on assistance programs the co-pay?

As the original report stated, from the Post, these are mostly older antibiotics, [most work well for people that do not take an over-abundance of them].

Also, does Schnucks have the full list available on their website yet?

Mr, most staph infections will not be stopped using these medications. They often take IV antibiotics to stop such strong infections. I am still amazed that there are Doctors out there saying Staph is not a contagious infection. I know a woman who has been hospitalized 3 times so far for hers. They just finally figured out it was Staph. She got it from her mother, who probably picked it up when hospitalized. I've warned the employee to use precautions so she doesn't spread it to our center.

They picked the one thing that nobody would ever be taking just for the fun of it.

Either you have a minor infection or you dont. If after taken a 21 day dose you still have a problem you should be moving up to the next level which isnt in this free plan.

Most Staph infections are topical. So the antibiotic is also topical.

Now that I have heard more about this story. I am leaning towards the idea. However, I do feel that to much can cause problems. I have been given so much amoxicillin over my life time. That I now have an allergic reaction to it. It makes me violently ill. I also have to look at the idea of free. At this point in our lives nothings free. So i'm looking at will the prices soon rise in the foods at Schnucks?

Hi Cutey.. the antibiotics for staph (for my father-in-law) at least, were given by IV at home around the clock. He got staph at the hospital during a hip replacement surgery. Luckily, he's ok today. Buzz Westfall died of staph infection.

Sounds like a good plan to me, but i gotta say this. Your blog seems like it was written like the stuff that is actually read on the news. If that is the case, i have a new found respect for anchors. I couldnt imagine reading facts like that, and having to turn it into a report. lol, I could be wrong about this, and that is just how the blog was written, but i would like to know.

I hope people will remember that antibiotics are for bacterial infections and not for viral infections (such as the flu or the common cold!).

This is a great idea!

I still take Sulfa drugs for certain infections. That is how rarely I take antibiotics. Still suffering from the flu a bit. I've only taken 2 doses of Dayquil. The rest of the time . . . well, I deal with the symptoms. Once I got it out of my chest, the sinus issues are just irritations.
