STL to AK and Back Again

by AngelaHutti from St.Louis

Last Post 28 days, 21 hours Ago

Well, Sunday starts the week on a wet note. No all day rain, but scattered showers and thunderstorms are in the region as I type on Sunday morning, mainly north and east of downtown. Then another round of storms is possible Sunday afternoon and evening thanks to warm and humid air. Some storms could be strong to severe.
Today’s wet weather is courtesy of the last week front, wind shift, trough, disturbance, or whatever you want to call it to move through St. Louis in the Northwest Flow. On Monday, high pressure slides in for a one day reprieve from storms.
Warm air advection returns to St. Louis on Tuesday and that means more unstable air. Partly cloudy skies with summer-time pop thunderstorms possible in the afternoons of Tues-Fri.
As for the rivers, Alton, St. Louis, and Chester have all crested. Louisiana and Clarksville will crest Sunday evening. Winfield and Grafton crest on Monday. All river crest predictions have come down in the last 48 hours, but of course there is still plenty of devastation.

Pretty cool stuff going on out there today. A quick look at the radar shows what happens when you get a cold upper low moving Southward atop moist, unstable air. Basically the whole Eastern 1/3 of the US is covered in scattered storms! A couple of vort lobes/shortwaves to our North will be pinwheeling down through the area, possibly bringing another round of more scattered storms this afternoon, but I have a feeling the focus is now to our East, as most of the convection seems to be favoring the periphery of the weak surface trof and shortwave moving across Indiana now.

This going to sound crazy, but we are actually starting get a little too dry in O'Fallon, MO. We've had some light showers but no significant rain in more than two weeks. I decided to hold off cutting the grass this weekend because it has quit growing and I'm afraid with the forecast heat it might burn if it's too short.

This week starts off the wet pattern (set to pay us a lengthy visit) that BRTN and I laid out last week. NCRF (North Central River Forecast/ Mississippi River forecast) is worried about heavy rains in the future for both the Missouri Basin and the flood striken areas of the upper midwest. By weeks end we could be looking at rainfall totals of 4-8" with possibly higher amounts across the Upper Midwest. As for us, it all depends if we get those thunderstorms/MCS's that just sit over the same area, and there is a possiblity of that all this week and into next (excluding monday). NCRF states heavy rains on the Missouri Basin could cause a signifigant rise on the Missouri which could cause STL to rise again, and the tributaries of IA and WI are also mentioned for caution. This is exactly what flood victims don't want to hear. At this time the flood of 93 was just getting started. Let's keep a close eye on the rivers well into the month of July. They may go down or hover some untill the next wall of water come down the area rivers. Thanks.

Here's what the HPC has to say. It seems like everyone is on the same page, the rain will be returning to the flood stricken areas once again, unfortunately.

Heavy rains over Nebraska and NE Kansas overnight. This should send another shudder down the Missouri.

SPC has expanded the slight risk area for today to include the northern and western part of the metro area. Also nice band of showers with a bit of a bow echo moving into the western counties.

Born and raised in St. Louis, I'm living my dream of being a meteorologist. I came to Fox 2 in October 2006 after a few wonderful years doing weekend weather for KTVA CBS 11 in Anchorage, AK. Look for me weekend mornings on Fox 2 and at every Cardinals game I can possibly get to!
