14dabucs's Blog

Well, consider me a freak... my husband certainly does. Like I said on Glenn's blog, we live in a house that was a foreclosure. For some reason, everything (and I mean everything) in the yard was cut down. Over the past four years, I've worked to get things a little more colorful. Our yard presents a number of challenges as there are drainage problems ( we live on a huge hill and our backyard is one bog slope towards the house). We've done some digging and other things to alleviate the problems, and there is nothing like piddling around the yard on a gorgeous day. Right now, the yard is trashed. In hopes of putting pressure on myself to stay on top of the yard, I am sharing pictures from last year.

Feel free to share pictures of your yard and offer tips on what I can do to improve mine (I need mulch!)

First is the bit in the front. Japanese Maple (diessctum, I think) with iris, liriope and celosia.

Strawberry patch in the backyard. If anyone has clues how to keep birds away, lemme hear them. I used netting last year and it failed miserably.

Dinky herb garden with lemon balm, lavender, dill (I live the smell of dill), chives and some eunonymous.

Planter. Can't remember what is in here although I think I ended up planting the rose stuff and also the fiber optic grass.

Another planter. Now I remember replanting both planters. The Bloodgrass in now in front of the Japenese Maple, if it survived the winter. The caladium tanked when we were on vacation in August.

My attempt to produce a nearly all-white garden in the front yard. Definitely a work in progress and I am not-at-all patiently waiting to see what comes back, it all should, as it is all perennials. Key word there is "should."

Planter in front. Did I mention I love dill?

Herb garden later in the year. Dig the dill!

Coreopsis (moonbeam) and dwarf Korean lilac in backyard

Hardy hibiscus (we shall see) and Witch's broom in backyard

Color added to the patio

Bub's Birch tree, planted a few months after he was born.

I love this blog! My kinda thing. And I love kathymc's joyful girl! 14, we can talk plants all day. You have lamb's ear in one of your pots, the fuzzy whitish leaves. It blooms purple spikes in spring. I had a lot of that in the ground at old house. We're also getting things started at new house, so you and I can chat. I'm willing to share perennial cuttings with anyone once I get some going. I took many cuttings/starts from the old house but not all made it. Enough did, though. And I need all the starts I can get, both of perennials and shrubs/trees.

Chives, I have a clump of those and use them all season. They're good year round except in the dead of winter. Snip and freeze in ice cubes for year-round use.

14, you have to tell me how you get photos here. Everyone seems to be able to do this, but I haven't had any luck. Someone said you can pull photos from the ones on your blog, but it didn't work for me. I got one here through photobucket, once, and not where I wanted it. Can you shed insight on that?

I love your photos! We have new strawberries, too, but the birds didn't bother them much. Maybe Janis has some advice on that.

Bub's tree is a great idea! We've done that and also given trees for gifts when someone dies. You have a great start and things look good! Perennials will look better each year.

Sharon... I am not so good with knowing about how to do cuttings, but you can come on over and grab some anytime if you know how! I call that area around the Japanese Maple in the front yard Bub's garden because i put that funky brain-looking celosia in there and of course the Lamb's Ear. It seems to have survived the winter.

I switched to all perennials in the front yard (the white garden) and will be eager to see how much survived the winter, especially some evening primrose. I figure I can do annuals as container plants.

Here is the deal on photos, and if it doesn't help, just shoot me an email, which I'll include at the end.

First, go to photobucket and log into your account.

It should take you to your main album page (which will also show your sub albums).

Above each picture, there are some options -> move/edit/share/delete. The first thing to do is edit the picture so it is not to big for the blog. Click on EDIT.

Across the top are options -> full size/resize/rotate/share/etc etc. Click on RESIZE. I chose the MESSAGE BOARD option for the pictures I included in this blog. If you want them a tad smaller, choose the WEBSITE,EMAIL option. Any smaller and they are tough to see.

You'll get a popup window that says You are about to resize this photo. Are you sure you want to do that? Click YES.

A bar across the top says IMAGE RESIZED.

On the right hand side, you see a few links to use. They read, from top to bottom -> URL LINK Email & IM/HTML TAG, Websites & Blogs/IMG CODES, Forums & Bulletin Boards.

COPY the HTML TAG box (Highlight, then CTRL+C).

PASTE the HTML TAG BOX into your blog (CTRL+P).

For some reason, my pictures did not show up at first, but then they did after I went to edit the whole thing. I didn't make any changes and just hit post, and they showed up. I hope that helps and I look forward to seeing your pictures!

Here's my email if you still have problems:

there you go!

Thank you! I'll keep this info and try it when I have time or want to add just a photo to one of my blogs when appropriate.

Someone stole part of one of my photos, so whether I post any more photos depends on how the web team handles this situation.

My perennials will need a couple years to grow bigger, for the most part, and then some can be divided. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with most of the property, so it will be slow. The folks who moved into our last house emailed me to say that all their friends said it looks like Missouri Botanical Garden when they come over, and they never know what will come up or bloom from week to week. I planted too much there, so I'll try to plan things here a little better. I didn't bring any of the problem plants with me, or the invasive ones.

Oh! That's Daisy! Our nutball Springer/Pointer mix. We got her as a rescue dog at Adopt-A-Stray. She is a trip. Only dog I ever met that LOVES to be cuddled and hugged.

And I am so sorry about the use of the photo. I'd be mad too.

Sharon, I was tremendously overwhelmed once I really started thinking about what to do with an empty yard. We ended up paying a girl from Frisella's $150 for a blueprint of what to do. The work, with labor and materials would have been about $6,000. Instead, we've done it all ourselves and it's a lot more satisfying. She included things I wanted (had to had to have some mock orange bushes, and my husband insisted on Snowball Vibernum), and she left us plenty of options to do with as we wished. Best $150 I ever spent.

I just moved into a house at Christmastime and I can't wait to see what (if anything) grows. I plan to spend alot of time in the yard this year, I haven't been able to do that since I lived in Brentwwod!

I'm a bit overwhelmed, too, trying to think of what would look nice in the long run, allowing for growth of large trees that are small now. We put in the trees first, the anchors, and then some shrubs. Could use more, but they also need room to grow, as they will if they survive. There was no landscaping here, so really a blank canvas.

wacky, let us know what grows at your house. Fun to be surprised!

Yeah! That should be fun wacky. The only thing that grew in my yard were daylillies that never bloomed.

And about 22 varieties of grass. None the good kind.
